“I didn’t want to write about the Iraq adventure out of my political creed…A play may spark the beginning of compassion or thought, but change is very difficult and painful. Theatre Communications Group The 2009 Free Night of Theater New York celebration was rained out of Union Square, but being theatre-people, we rallied our resources and improvised. Everyone stayed warm and cozy inside the Union Square Theatre for a fantastic day of talks and performances. All photos by Ashley Faison.

Theatre Communications Group What's your take on this? Abigail Breslin has been cast as Helen Keller in the Broadway revival of "Helen Keller", stirring controversy among those who think a blind or deaf actress should have been cast in the role. Let the debate begin...

Should producers have chosen a deaf or blind child actress to play Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker"?

Ideally, yes, one should always cast the appropriate actor for any given part. But how many times has a straight person played a gay person and vice versa? An American played a Brit? An Australian played an American? Are you telling me there weren't actors available from those pools to draw from? Of course not, but the director picked the ... I think the whole point of an argument here is pointless. there are several things to keep in mind here, firstly, does the directorial staff have the knowledge and understanding it would take to make sure said blind/deaf person had all the tools needed in order to efficiently learn their lines and blocking. Secondly, in this economy, can they ... Read Moreafford the extra staff it would take. Thirdly, what are Equities' rules on this, I don't know personally, but with rules that require a chiropractor in the wings of every rehearsal and performance when there is a rake higher than three inches, there's bound to be a knot. When we are talking big show, and shrinking broadway budgets, practicality must be at the forefront of our minds. I agree with Cindy Wagner, why not offer their services and and advice rather than protest? A revival of a show like "Helen Keller" by nature is trying to assist the cause. And one could argue, by having an actress who does not live as Helen did, she is having to learn and grow as a person, and try to find a way to connect, her story may influence and help teach many others who wish to learn more.
