As Central Pennsylvanians, we love our Phillies, and are all following the World Series closely (Cliff Lee is the man, and we say Phillies in 5). Our local TV news station Fox43 picked up a Fish Blog entry about a Phillies-themed tank, and the advantages of starting with a tank theme. Biotropes, planted tanks, and even... Sponge Bob tanks are all interesting themes to get started with: anyone have any favorites they like? Feel free to send pics!Read More

Hi Elizabeth. Sounds like you may have to allow your biological filtration to recover and allow your tank to cycle after such a rapid overhaul. 4 days is not an incredibly long time coupled with the large water change and media swap out. We would recommend monitoring your nitrite and ammonia levels: if properly cycled these should be around 0ppm. You may also try using a biological filter enhancer to expediate the process. Let us know if you need additional assistance. Good luck!

Seri Dukart

Seri Dukart Is there a turtle I can put in my 55 gallon freshwater tank when I have it set up? I saw a tank at a funeral home yesterday that had a turtle swimming around in it and he was so playful and affectionate and fun to watch...but I didn't think you could have turtles in a full tank like that? If I got a turtle log, could I put one in there, and if so, what kind? I plan to have large chichlids.

Hi Seri, Frank Indiviglio here. Thanks for your question and kind comments.
Turtles can indeed make entertaining and long-lived pets. However, it... Read More’s nearly impossible to house them with fish in an aquarium. Even the smallest turtle will latch onto the fins or skin of fishes far too big to eat, injuring them in the process. You would need a different type of filter for turtles, but even with such the ammonia they produce eventually will kill most fish. Most turtles also need a UVB light as well as an incandescent light to create a warm basking site. There are a number of turtles that do well in deep water tanks, but again, not with fish. If you are interested in keeping turtles, please check some of my articles on ThatReptileBlog. Good luck!

That's what I thought, so I was very surprised to see the turtle in the tank with all the chichlids. When I commented on my blog, another friend said she has a bunch of little turtles in her tank with her fish. Thought it was odd.

Seri Dukart

Seri Dukart I just dragged my 55 gallon tank out of storage and plan to set it up in the next few weeks! I need new gravel, heater, and filter...hoping a good sale is coming up so I can afford to get started. Happy to have found your site, love the interaction and personal advice on here too, and on twitter!

Russell Bentley

Russell Bentley I have a firetail eel named "Eli" whom my daughter got by accident, but we've grown to love him so. He was only about 6 inches when we got him, now he is well over 20". I hear tell they can get up to 39". So I was wondering what size tank I need to get for him? He's currently in a 55 gal with a few others.

A 100 gallon is recommended for the fire eel as it does get pretty long, but it is not typically an active swimmer like other fish. Give him a nice log or cave and a soft, deep sand bed to burrow into if possible. A tight fitting lid is also highly recommended. A 125 or a 180 may have better dimensions if you can go that large, especially if you want to keep other fish too. Good luck!
