WASHINGTON — People attacked because of their sexual orientation or gender would receive federal protections under a Senate-approved measure that significantly expands the reach of hate crimes law.

Of course Susanne misses a key subtlety that every "hate-crime" proponent misses. The core crime that exposed the "hate" merits a certain punishment. Say it's 3 years for assault. If someone gets a single minute more behind bars for the thoughts going through their head, that extra time is like a separate sentence for their thoughts. A thought crime. Worse still is that the application of these laws exists strictly to contradict Darwin and exalt the weak. That's sickening.

Wow. Several of you are suggesting that a person's motivation has no bearing on the severity of the offense. That is ridiculous. Let's take the example of killing someone. Soldiers do it all the time. Are they guilty of the same crime as a bunch of guys that chain somebody up behind their car and drag him until he is dead? What about mercy ... Read Morekilling? Is that the same as stomping on babies until they are dead? Your thoughts are protected until they move you to action. Once they do, they are fair game.

The First Amendment Conservatives give lip service to the constitution then go and set up regulation boards to monitor indecency.. when the libs come in they wonder how they ended up slaves to unearned public broadcasting, mainstream media monopolies, and talk radio fairness (doctrines); you sacrificed liberty for security - now you deserve neither.
