The Heretic's Daughter

Bernie Baird McDowell

Bernie Baird McDowell Kathleen, The book was great...very easy to spend the whole day reading.
My husband is descended from Richard. Martha and Thomas are his 7th Gr Grandparents. An interesting connection is: Asa Carrier, 4th Great for my husband and Great Grandson of Martha and Thomas marries Patty Ballard...Great Grandaughter of Joseph...... Ballard, who I believe, was the brother of the Constable who arrested the Carrier family.
I am a genealogist and have been working on this family on and off for the last 25 years. I have tried to research Thomas and would love to get in touch with you.

Amanda: Thank you for commenting on the book--and for your enthusiasm. It's wonderful to hear from readers who were moved by the book, especially a fellow descendant of the persecuted "witches." All the best, Kathleen

Susan Ingraham Becher

Susan Ingraham Becher I just finished reading it last week. Wonderfully written with detail that really fleshes out the people involved. It's easy with all of our current comforts to forget how bare the existence was for the early colonists. Fear and need always seem to go hand in hand. I loved the book and have recommended it to others.

Lori Granger

Lori Granger I finished the book last night amid tears....what a wonderful story you've woven around your ancestors. I, too, had ancestors persecuted as witches (in the same jail cells as Martha and her children)...and although I know how wretched the conditions were, it really hit me while I went through it with Sarah. Thank you! I look forward to reading the prequel....

Dear Lori:
Thank you so much for your comments. One of the best things since publishing the book has been being contacted by fellow descendants of those brave souls who survived the witch trials. All the best, Kathleen

Charlie Gray

Charlie Gray Just finished the book, and given that I have a 6 and 10 year old, the fact that I bought the book Friday night and finished it Sunday is a testimony to what an excellent read HERetic's Daughter is (though maybe not the quality of my parenting the last 48 hours). I don't think I recall a book that weaved the olifactor...y so artfully into the story. Not only could I imagine the world of Sarah, I smelled it. I will have to get a wreath of Rosemary and keep it in the kitchen to remember Martha by.

I was particularly intrigued by my own emotions and attachments as an 11th generation decendent of Rev. Francis Dane. It made me want to go to Mass and see (and smell!) the earth where my family and country have sprouted. I couldn't help but think of the parallels with the Taliban and wonder what Cotton Mather would have to say to Bin Laden and what stories of sexism, intolerance, betraylal and loss must be being forged in Afghanistan today. Thanks for a great read!

Dear Charlie: Thank you so much for your kind words and support of the book. I too can't smell a sprig of Rosemary without thinking of Martha---and all of the people, including the Danes, that persevered during that difficult time.
