“It has been a truly amazing season that has been a testament to the immense talent we have in Royston – a talent that can only grow and develop through events such as these – we are all very proud of our students!” Mrs Jenny Warburton, Head of Performing Arts at Meridian School
Performing Arts Week at Meridian was a resounding success and ended on the Friday with a stunning inter-school musical collaboration.
Head of Performing Arts, Jenny Warburton, Head of Sixth Form, David Atkins and First Schools’ music specialist Louise Atkins worked with selected pupils from five of the Royston area’s First Schools, Greneway and Roysia Middle Schools and the students from the Meridian School Choir for the day, culminating in a showcase event on stage in the afternoon – the first time a choir of 160+ students aged 7-18 years old have performed together on stage at Meridian.
The pupils performed a number of show songs, from the rousing Lambeth Walk and Breaking Free to the beautiful Close Every Door, which the first school children sang with delightfully clear voices, joined later in the piece by the rest of the choir in perfect harmony.
The Middle School children enjoyed themselves on their Summertime Medley, with budding Sandy and Danny’s giving an enjoyable performance, followed by the provoking Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.
Talented soloist Michael Heasell stirred the senses with his faultless performance of Music of the Night.
The real stars of the show were the Meridian School Choir with their spine-tingling version of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. Beautifully haunting, talent like this has so obviously been nurtured throughout the school system and is the product of inspirational and passionate teachers. I even heard a rumour that some of the choir are now First Year University students, and chose to return to their school to perform. That in itself is great credit indeed.
As parents, friends and teachers, we were taken on an emotional musical journey, most unexpected in a school hall on a Friday afternoon. What shone through overall, along with the pride in our own children, was the collaboration that can, and has, been achieved through the Royston school system, and the talent that it nurtures.
The afternoon ended with the fun and uplifting We Go Together, and you know what, the schools and age groups really do – well done to everyone who made this showcase possible!

May is always a great month in Royston, with two Bank Holidays and many outdoor events taking place, from the Royston May Fayre and Barracuda Kid's Fun Day to Barkway Market and Ashwell at Home, the Green Man Indie Weekender and the Royston Town Football Club Beer Festival to name a few - something for everyone!
On a personal note, the May issue will go down in history as 'the one I did my back in over'.
Easter holidays led to shorter deadlines and a final print deadline that extended well into the night; somehow it seemed easier to work on my laptop slumped on the sofa rather than at my desk ... until the next morning when I couldn't get out of bed! It's been a rather painful few days but I'm on the mend - a huge thank you to Jean and Ian at the Royston Complementary Health Centre for helping to fix me today, and I promise, no more late nights spent working... until next month that is ...
Best wishes,
Cath
