Egos aside, how wide do you really need your planer to be? If I have an 8″ jointer, do I really need a 20″ planer to flatten the other side of the board? Yes, I could glue two 8″ boards together and plane them together, but is the quality really that much better? I h...

When working in hardwoods there are still boards that are 20 inches wide and it is very nice to be able to plane before defecting such a piece. Granted they are getting rare but I still get some. Also check out my pictures and look at the counter top made from cypress. It is glued up and I was able to plane it to my 1 inch thickness after edge glueing and before adding the back splash and front edge.

I have a 13" planer and 6" jointer (related but different, I have a 22" drum sander). I very rarely find myself wishing for a wider planer. Only once did I get boards that were 15" wide, and they were rough-edged/uneven so I just trimmed them up before planing. I often wish my jointer was larger however. Now that I have the drum sander, if I really needed to clean up wide boards I'd just throw some 36 grit in there and take care of it that way.

A very Merry Christmas from the Wood Whisperer Team! As you can see in the picture, my dream of playing the slightly disinterested/confused grandmother in a family photo has finally come true! Santa really does grant wishes!

I hope you folks remember my good buddy Duane from the Steamer Trunk Series. Many of you have been asking for an update on “Big D” so I am excited to post these pictures. Duane is doing very well and he’s apparently been busy cranking out steamer trunks like a mad man! And...

I love the modern style of this piece. Jonathan has creatively solved some common organizational issues with today’s home entertainment systems. And his wood choice, colors, and finish are great! ...

Simon Arthrell Does anyone here have any experience using a portable edgebander with a hot glue pot? I'm thinking of buying one to fit 3mm abs edgeing.

I’ve had the DeWalt Impact driver in my shop for several months now and I finally decided it was time to talk about it. Now this is my first and only impact driver, so I can’t really compare it to other brands. I...

Hi Mark, thx and nice roundup as usual, you got the main point of impacts through - they're extremely easy to use one-handed even with big screws and hard materials, and MUCH less fatigueing when lots of screws are to be driven. I've used mine for decking, framing and kitchen remodelling. My only addon tip is not to get the smaller one, even if the... See More numbers in the spec are good. E.g. the 14.4v Panasonic EY7540 is only ounces heavier than the 10.8v Bosch Impactor and similar, but a far more efficient, ergonomic, less noisy and controllable tool for mid to heavy jobs.
For lag bolts and beam studs I recommend getting a 3/4 or 1/2" cordless impact.

Seasons greetings from Norway to y'all
& keep up the good work! c",)

*ed* With less fatigueing, I mean the torque from the driving is taken up by the hammer/anvil action in the drill, and not transferred to your wrist - takes a little getting used to, when you see that 4" screw sink like in butter.. ;)

This is an amazing piece of work by Denis, “The Teenage Woodworker”. Check it out! This desk is my pride and joy! It’s a serpentine Bow Front writing desk that I built over the summer out of a giant slab of 10/4 x 13” x 9’ ribboned Sapele. That bei...

Now here’s an interesting way to use some salvaged wood. Talk about a one of a kind piece! A very cool project submitted by Brian. The table measures 50″W x 14″D x 32″H. The base is solid maple, painted flat black w/a rub on satin finish. I did ...

I have a hunk of bloodwood, well over 4/4, that is wide enough to be the top of a table I want to make.

I cut some from one end to use for another project and that wood is very reactionary, moving a few thousandths a day until I laminated it with walnut.

What could I possibly do to stabilize a very large single board?
