I recently caught this film on Film4, over here in the UK - I'd never heard of it, didn't look it up on the net and so watched it with no expectations.

What a shock. This film is absolutely amazing; powerful imagery, beautiful photography and a stunning soundtrack (which I intend to buy).

This film examines the people caught up in the business of war, how they interact with each other and their environment and how they cope in extreme situations.

I understand why a lot of people won't/don't rate it highly - this is not a 2D action film, with black-hat villains, medals and happy endings. This is a film about the madness of war, the resilience of nature, man's inhumanity towards his fellow man, the fragility of life, the spectre of death and the indistinct line that separates good from evil.

If your enthusiastic about film, then this is an emotional roller-coaster that should be ridden at least once.

A fantastic film that isn't all about blood and guts but about the true horrors of war and how it changes men. It's dialogue is golden, poetic and mesmerising, with terrific performances from Penn, Cavieziel, Koteas and Nolte. I've shown it to my friends and they all get so bored of the film, because they don't appreciate film-making like this anymore and because they will never see what the few does: how this film can change your perception on everything around you.

I found the book much better than the film, though it did do a good job capturing the tone and scenery. I just dont like it when screenplays change drastic parts of the original author's story. In the book Witt does not die. Plus many other smaller changes. I just didnt like how they completely changed the ending but I still found it a good movie. They did it too with Jones' book "Some came Running", and Im just finishing "From here to Eternity and wondering if they change the ending in that film version as well.

Deep philosophy ... at some points the film reveals its eyes to the things that are not worth to pay attention ... The film is at all times
