On Friday, Claudette Lawrence, a supporter of Time to Change, went to 10 Downing Street to discuss stigma and discrimination with Gordon Brown’s special advisor on health policy, Greg Beales. read more

Time to Change
Earlier on this year, Claudette wrote a letter to Gordon Brown, telling him about her experience of mental illness, and the discrimination she faced at work because of it. She also spoke of her support for the Time to Change campaign, and asked if she could meet with the PM to talk about mental health and stigma.
A few ......months later, Claudette received a letter from Gordon Brown stating his support for Time to Change, and inviting her to no.10 to meet with his special adviser on health policy, Greg Beales.
That day has come, and today she will be meeting with Greg Beales at Downing Street! We're going to be following her visit on Twitter, so keep an eye on it throughout the day to find out how it goes. http://www.twitter.com/TimetoChange
Time to Change is all about individuals taking ownership of the movement for change, and Claudette's visit shows that it is ordinary people standing up and taking action that can make change happen. What an inspiration!

Read all about it: Sun changes “schizo” headline
Success!
Earlier this week, Tuesday 17th November, we alerted you to another “schizo” Sun headline which ran “Fury at escape of killer schizo”
We urged you to contact The Sun and / or the Press Complaints Commission to complain. Since then The Sun have changed their headl......ine! It now reads “Fury at shop escape of killer”
Here's a link to the new headline:

We know that many of you did contact The Sun, thank you. Whilst we cannot be certain our members’ protest were the motivator in changing this headline we believe keeping up pressure does have an effect and it does contribute to challenging stigma.
Thank you,

'Keeping Schtum?'
Following the tragic death of German footballer Robert Enke, http://twurl.nl/ucogwh the difficulties people feel about being open about their mental health experience has made international headlines. Enke's death has prompted a wave of public sympathy which makes it even harder to understand today's ......Financial Times Deutschland article 'The Perils of Revealing Your Illness at Work' http://digg.com/u1GXuP that highlights how pervasive the myths are that surround mental illness.
As we know at Time to Change, 'Keeping schtum' about mental health problems only contributes to stigma, and in Robert Enke's case, can lead to people feeling they can't continue. The FTD also takes a swipe at two well known Time to Change faces, Stephen Fry and Alistair Campbell, suggesting that their public positions mean that disclosures about their own mental health 'don't count'. On the contrary, it is their candour that has already helped bring mental health, and the stigma surrounding it, to the forefront of public attention. Every person who is open about their experiences should be applauded. Each is contributing to improving the lives of the 1 in 4 people who will experience a mental health problem.

Gone are the days of pre-hire health checks. People openly discuss intimate illnesses, so why does mental illness still remain taboo?

Time to Change
Open Up is very proud and pleased to announce their Open Up Initiatives for 2009-2010.
Open Up is one of the Time to Change projects, and the Initiatives Scheme is Open Up’s programme of financial and practical support and encouragement, for people with experience of mental distress who want to set up their own anti-di......scrimination projects. We work with 16 Initiatives over a period of one year, to help them to get their projects up and running.
This summer we received over 90 applications for the Open Up Initiatives scheme. All were of a very high standard, which made the decision process slightly difficult - but after a lengthy discussion our excellent panel came up with 16 great projects - and we are very much looking forward to working with them all over the coming year.
To find out more about our 2009-10 Initiatives, visit the website: http://www.open-up.org.uk/initiatives/20 09-10. And keep checking back for their profiles and blogs which will be coming soon.
