I was asked a question on raising diabetes awareness in one's own community. There are a number of things you can do, and the best is to partner with an organization.
create a DESA chapter in your area.
create a support group either with a local hospital or with JDRF/ADA and have regular meetings. Support group meetings can be advertised in the local paper free of charge.
contact the mayor's office, maybe they will agree to participate in the World Diabetes Day Monument Challenge
World Diabetes Day http://www.worlddiabetesda y.org/
WDD Monument Challenge http://www.worlddiabetesda y.org/events/monument-chal lenge
contact the public library, here in DC the public library sponsors diabetes education and has a small book collection
Diabetes for Life Learning Center http://www.dclibrary.org/d cpl/cwp/view.asp?a=1269&q= 567430
Advertise on listservs for people with diabetes in your area. Insulin pumpers has a children with diabetes list, for example. Getting other people involved is the best way to make a support group successful.
