Opposition Leader Darrell Dexter is calling on Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald to bring in a budget on time.
The NDP leader says MacDonald's next budget must include measures that will ensure Nova Scotians are best prepared to deal with the current economic climate.

Dexter says delaying a provincial budget in light of the current economic situation ``will only hurt Nova Scotian families'' and delay grants to community organizations.

Without a timely provincial budget, he says school boards will be unable to hire teachers, roads will not be paved and emergency rooms will continue to close.

Dexter says 5,000 Nova Scotians lost their jobs in November and December and delaying the budget until May or June will only delay the province's response to those losses.
