I teach at a Math and Science residential magnet HS. Along with a small committee of students, I am trying to plan various (and inexpensive) events that celebrate the arts and humanities. There is very little arts opportunities around us.
Activities we have planned so far are Open Mic nights, a singer/songwriter guest speaker, a medieval feast, a communal canvas, starting a literary magazine, supporting the local culture by sponsoring a trip to an elaborate corn maze, having a performing arts assembly that will feature our student pianists, bag pipe players, cello players, singers, dancers and so on, celebrating the culinary arts through an "Iron Stomach" competition in which students will compete in teams for an Iron Chef like challenge (faculty judges and the secret ingredient will be potatoes since it is a local product), and finally a fall festival and art exhibit.
If anyone has any other ideas for ways we can encourage the arts and humanities at a small isolated math and science school, I'd love to hear them!

I'm in efforts to give incentive to the principal of La Grange Elementary School to integrate professional dance instruction in their arts curriculum. In the past I offered the La Grange Elementary School a month long residency teaching contemporary dance to more than 200 students. The students loved it. The experience ended with a beautiful performance at the Louisville Zoo for the Earth Day celebration. I offered this residency as a contribution to the school. I didn't receive any compensation. They didn't have budget for this type of activity. We need a Kentucky Arts and Humanities Education collaborative to back up artists like me.
Do you have any suggestions?
I wish you much success with your fundraising event.

It's a collaborative efforts among our member organizations, artists, teachers, school administrators to make this happen. You can learn more about the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative's programs in DC Public Schools at http://www.dccollaborative .org/programoverview.html
In 2004, DCPS administration tasked the DC Collaborative with developing a comprehensive Arts Education Plan for the District school system. We submitted a preliminary report in January 2005 that includes a timeline and objectives. The final plan will span the Arts Education Continuum: arts experiences, arts learning, and arts integration.
You can see this full plan at http://www.dccollaborative .org/curriculumartslearnin g.html
Perhaps this will give you more ideas on how to promote and integrate arts and the humanities into your Kentucky schools.

HEALING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC: Longwood Symphony Orchestra is an 85 piece orchestra whose musicians are also health care professionals. On October 17, 2009, 14 chamber music groups will perform for 1000 patients in 21 health care facilities across greater Boston on a single day. Our music will heal patients, caregivers and staff and the musician/healers themselves.
Joy, sorrow, tears, lamentation, laughter-- to all these music gives voice, but in such a way that we are transported from the world of unrest to a world of peace, and see reality in a new way. --Dr. Albert Schweitzer
