I'm late, my apoligies to Pat.
I'd love to make groups, and more pages, and more sites. My issue is keeping up with them. I come over here every week, and normally check back throughout the week, once or twice, but that's cause I love Pat. :D
I rarely schedule time to go out and meet people or join groups.
I have myspace, writingroom, gather, facebook, wordpress, and I know I'm missing a few. My biggest hits per day is myspace, in which I average about 20 per day. Now most don't turn into book sales and I've yet to figure out how to fix that. I'd love to have more time to put up blogs and I'm getting better.
My current promotion plan is finish book number three, send it off and spend time promoting my current two and that one. Then after six weeks to two months or until I can't stand promoting any longer, I'll hit the writing again.

Jonathan,
These are great tips. I'll be releasing my first book sometime this spring and am working on honing my preliminary marketing plan.
Thanks,
Dianne G. Sagan

I have a group and I use the 'people you may know' feature a lot. I also add people that I've met at conventions.
I find my facebook group gets me about 95% more business than my website does despite the fact i update both regularly and post links to both everywhere. On facebook you can message members when there is something new, and I usually change my personal status to reflect what I'm working on.
Now, I'll admit, out of all the business I get off facebook, I've only sold 4 books. Mostly I'm selling lots of the chainmaille jewelry that I make. 4 is better than none though.
I've just started joining writer and reader facebook groups that allow authors to promote their books, so that may or may not increase my book sales.
For selling books I do best by setting up at conventions ^_^
