*BOOKS*
Turmoil in Burma, by David Steinberg (generally cautious about the prospects for democracy, but very knowledgeable. I know him personally to really dislike the government)

River of Lost Footsteps, by Thant Myint-U (a general history of Burma, starting from the beginning)

Burma: Curse of Independence, by Shelby Tucker (about the ethnic minority groups and their armed conflicts)

Land of Green Ghosts, by Pascal Khoo Thwe (a great account by a refugee and dissident)

Perfect Hostage, by Justin Wintle (about Aung San Suu Kyi)

Enemies of the State, by Mary Callahan (the definitive work on the Burmese army in the 1950s)

Living Silence, by Christina Fink (about daily life in Burma)

And, of course, the books by Aung San Suu Kyi herself, including "Freedom from Fear" and "Letters from Burma"

"Piano Tuner" is a recent novel about colonial Burma.

"Land of Green Ghosts" is one of the most moving accounts and reads like a novel, so if you prefer good writing that's got the added benefit of being true.

George Orwell wrote about colonial Burma (based on his experiences) in "Burmese Days"

"Finding George Orwell in Burma" by Emma Larkin isn't a novel but tracks Orwell's experiences and literary inspirations in Burma. It's well written and has plenty of trivia for literature lovers.

Also, for a comprehensive booklist on Burma (Christina Fink's book is included) - see this link:

*VIDEOS*
I've compiled 3 playlists of YouTube videos about Burma. They are of course far from comprehensive, but they're intended to spread around to people who would like to learn more about Burma and the issues facing the Burmese right now. I will try to keep updating them, but it's pretty hard to keep up with all the new ones. If anyone finds any glaring omissions or new videos that should be added, please send me the urls, and I will update.

1. Background, history and major issues in Burma:

2. The current situation in Burma:

3. Burmese life - place, culture & traditions:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=83B84E9C691A7546

To keep the background/history playlist reasonably bite-sized, I left out a few documentaries:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LxlsDssjoc (Dealing With the Devil)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvBnrZhFiuE (Burma student power pt. 1)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60b6hqtXZxQ (Burma student power pt. 2)

Hey everyone

I noticed a typo on John's great update.

There is a Voices of Burma - which has a facebook group - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2241026779. They support Burmese artists on the Thai/Burma border.

There is Voices for Burma - who are involved in the Burmese tourism debate. www.voicesforburma.org

That's super Florent! I'm impressed and will look into this Yahoo pipe thing.

I took your feed to SpringWidgets and made one that anyone can put on their Webpage, blog, MySpace profile, Google start page, etc. and even FaceBook apparently (though I haven't figured out how yet on FB).

Just click this link to see it and get it. Get the copy/paste codes by clicking the options on the widget itself on this page:

http://tinyurl.com/2xnhn4

See it in use at:
http://Burma-we-care.tk

It looks very nice and works beautifully.

I did put your Yahoo pipe feed through Feedburner first. It seemed to make it work much better with the widget. I included your original link when I put it on my site.

Also, I added a second feed to the widget from the Help Burma group RSS feed at Ma.gnolia.com, to which I regularly post stories I think are especially important and not given enough attention in the MSM.

To see this second feed, click the little arrows at the top of the widget. Anyone can add more feeds to it, or edit it in various ways if they want, before posting it to a blog or wherever.

You can even put it on your desktop.

Wow Peter, great stuff! Cool little widget you made there! I'm going to add it to my google homepage. You just got to love web2.0 for the content manipulation power it affords us! I wasn't familiar with Springwidgets and feedburner. Looked them up and I think I'm going to be playing around with it a lot. I used Yahoo pipes to aggregate all the feeds, but some of the news sites didn't have rss feeds to start with so I had to scrape the news article links off them using feed43 and dapper (which can also be used to create widgets).

It took me a while scraping feed data off all of those non-rss/xml sites! so I'm happy the results of my hard work is being put to good use!

If I find the time I'll try to tweak the feed to get it to display article dates as well.

Cheers,
Florent
