Our mission, in partnership with the entire community, is to empower every student to become a life-long learner who is a responsible, productive and engaged citizen within the global community.

All teachers will engage every student in meaningful, authentic and rigorous work through the use of innovative instructional practices and supportive technologies that will motivate students to be self-directed and inquisitive learners.

Would you like more information about teaching in VA Beach?

I would love more information on substitute teaching and driving a bus.I am currently a sub at a middle school and love it.The EC class is my passion , but I invest no matter where I go.After this week my bus driving classes will be complete. My husband will be attending a job fair June 2nd in Virginia Beach to get the ball rolling on securing a job in networking, which is his field . I have been so blessed to be able to serve in the school system to be alongside our 2 kids.
How can I get started on ALL this?

We normally hire about 120 or so elementary teachers each year. Because of the economy we anticipate that fewer people will retire than normal. Because we have many teachers with military spouses we feel confident that there will be vacancies. We are guessing at least 50 to 60 elementary positions this season.

To become a sub, just complete a substitute application available at www.vbschools.com. On the application you would also indicate your areas of interest - bus driver and also teaching. We also offer substitute orientations regularly. Just call 757-263-1133 to schedule yourself to attend.

Good luck!

i check out vbschools.com twice a week. I am vey intersted in an assistant position but, have not been sucessful in my adventure. i've had a few interviews but as you can tell no luck, it would be a dream come true to actually be seen as "worthy to hire" . i worked with Parks and receation after school for 5 years so i do have a glance into VBCPS.

I'm sorry to hear that you are frustrated in your job search. The competition for teacher assistant positions is pretty intense. You must be doing soimething right however, because it sounds like you keep getting interviews -- many applicants don't get that far because there are so many. It appears that you are not winning the race during the actual interview process. You may want to consider beefing up your interviewing skills and strategies for the next go round. There are many ways to go about this. You could perhaps write down some interview questions (maybe you remember some from your actual interviews) and then have a friend go through a mock interview with you. Interviewing isn't something most people do every day, so many of us are uncomfortable or nervous and don't come across the way we want. Another way to practice or rehearse is in front of a mirror. Those are a just a couple of ideas. There are books out there with lots of other ideas as well. Good luck!

This is a neat resource! I am currently receiving my MAT at James Madison, preparing to be licensed in English, Secondary Ed upon my completion May 2010. I am from Virginia Beach and attended high school there. Does it hurt my chances in applying if I didn't do my student teaching in VB, but instead have a placement around the Harrisonburg area?

Thanks for your question. No, it will not hurt you to do student teaching somewhere other than VB. Our local colleges and universities don't produce enough teachers to fill our vacancies so we hire many teachers who have completed student teaching outside of the area. Enjoy your summer break!

I have applied for numerous positions with VB Schools. I just finished my Master's in Elementary Education at ODU and would LOVE to teach in Virginia Beach. I have yet to even have an interview, any suggestions? Thanks, Carrie Rowe

Hi Carrie,

Sorry we missed your post this summer. We checked your file and it looks like you have done everything as you should. All we can tell you is that because of the economy, not nearly as many teachers as usual decided to retire this year. We only hired 206 teachers this summer, which is the lowest number we've hired in years. I am glad to see that you are in our subfinder system. That's often a way to get to know people in the system. Hang in there. The economy is bound to turn around and current teachers will retire and make room for new ones eventually. Good luck!
