Here are some simple tips to effectively manage your time and improve your employability in these difficult times of recession.
1. Keep calm and realize that all businesses have their cycles. If it has gone down now, it will surely come up sooner than later.
2. Focus on building careers rather than getting any job. What this means is, analyze your areas of interests. Pursue jobs that are either in your areas of
interest or very close to them. If my interest lies in software, I'd look at all the jobs that are in software or that will get me closer to my dream job
when the market improves. I'd prefer a job in a teaching institute for softwares instead of taking up a marketing job in FMCG even if it means lesser salary
at present.
3. Keep honing your functional skills. When organizations start hiring again, you should have all the qualifications required.
4. Take additional effort to improve upon your communication skills. There is always scope of improvement there.
5.Every day increase your skills. You should be in a position to list down the things that you have learnt every month. This list will come in handy to
explain any gaps between your graduation and employment (if any)
6. If your dream job is in IT/ITES fields, learn to type. This is one skill overlooked by many. If by undergoing a few days of training you can save few
hours a day, calculate your saving for the next 38 years when you are going to use this tool almost everyday.
7. Keep yourself abreast of the latest technological advancements in your field of interest.
8. Use social networking sites like orkut, facebook, twitter and linked in to find people of similar interest and develop network with them.
9. Take help of your fellow mates who have got jobs to find out what industry demands.
10. Make your own website and start writing your blog. This will help you showcase your capabilities when there is a need.
11. Add alerts in http://alerts.google.com for your area of interest. You may also want to follow your dream companies.
12. Think about starting something of your own. Age is not a criteria for thinking big.
13. Before starting a business, write down your source of earning for the business. It should be a value add to the customer that should get you revenue.
There are zillions of sites out there and you will not be able to make a lot of money by advertising alone.
14. For a career in IT, aim at learning some basic programming skills. This will be helpful irrespective of what language you learn it in.
15. Focus on learning one database, one UI programming language and one scripting language for complete understanding of an IT system
16. Become net savvy by reading random things on the net. These should be from your area of interest.
17. Assess your current employability and areas of improvement. Work towards strengthening your weaknesses. (Disclaimer : We, at EmployDEX do skill
assessment)
18.Make yourself employable. The common skills looked at by most of the organizations are
Verbal ability
Quantitative ability
logical reasoning
Ability to solve puzzles
Problem solving
Data interpretation
Also most of these skills are also tested for various PG studies entrances like CAT, GRE, GMAT and other similar exams. Preparing for one will help you
perform better in all other related fields.
19. If your current education cannot get you a job of your choice, identify what do you need to study more. Invest in gaining additional qualifications.
