Back when Rocky Mtn. Airways was selling commuter tix between Denver and Aspen by the 10-book, I took my first ski trip to Colorado, the only girl with four guys. We flew O'Hare to Denver in a snowstorm, arriving at the old Stapleton airport to announcements of delays and cancellations, people racing to engage limos and land trans to somehow get to... See More the mountains. We assumed we'd get on a plane eventually, so went to the bar like any 24 year old group might, armed with our "lottery" tickets for the next flight out. The guys, smitten by pretty ski bunnies, draped in fur and jewelry, put me in the back seat, so to speak. I decided to return to the gate and read for a while, sitting in a very crowded area surrounded by the carry-on bags of all my traveling companions. No sooner than I sat down did I hear an announcement that read off the lucky winners of seats on what turned out to be the last flight out that night. I ran to the bar, hoping to locate my buds to hustle them onto the flight for the hasty departure to beat the dark and the storm, but could not scare them up anywhere. What to do with the bags, the lucky numbers, and only a few minutes to decide? The gate attendant assured me all would be fine, just hand the extra numbers to four other people, get on the plane, and sooner or later my friends would also show up in Aspen. The flight was unsettled, dropping what felt like several feet at a time, tilting and jumping around as if it were playing dodge ball. We landed safely, I arrived at the condo, and had one of the nicest sets of digs in Snowmass all to myself for an entire evening. Peaceful. Quiet. Clean. Smiling as I slid into the jacuzzi tub with a little glass of bubbly. Ahhh, not quite sweet revenge, but not completely devoid of it either. And, btw, had a great week skiing the big burn, the wonderful big runs and my first knee-deep powder.

Returning from a two-week trip to New Zealand, at the airport we discovered our travel agent had failed to include tickets for our return flight so we had to purchase new tickets to fly home to Nashville. Grrrr.... The ticket agent for Qantas took pity on my husband and me and unbeknownst to us until we boarded the plane, bumped us up to business class, making the flight from Auckland to LA much better and definitely turning our travel disaster into a more pleasant experience.

Pizza sounds perfect but lets go out on the edge do something delightfully crazy. Lets pair that traditional New York pizza with an appropriate Oregon craft saké like G Joy. Its a big undiluted Genshu and is amazing with Pizza and heartier dishes.

One of my most memorable food/travel experiences was my honeymoon at the Bucuti Beach Resort in Aruba. The gorgeous, small, quaint resort was breathtaking and the staff were friendly and helpful. The best dining was at the Flying Fishbone in Aruba where I had the best lobster of my life (grilled lobster) while dining barefoot at a table in the sand at the ocean's edge. It could not have been more perfect!

My memorable food/travel experiences this year are: Tokyo's Tsukiji Market. The sushi/sashimi were so delicious that I would visit Japan again. Nara's okonomiyaki after walking around the old capital of Japan. Singapore's chili crab at No Signboard was just heavenly and incomparable!
