Patrick McAlvey: 'I Was Harmed By 'Ex-Gay' Therapy
Patrick McAlvey entered therapy to change his sexual orientation at the age of 19. His former counselor, Mike Jones, is currently the director of Corduroy Stone, an affiliate of Exodus International.
He originally met Jones after he spoke at a Church youth ministry, while McAlvey was still in Middle School. The two connected years later, after McAlvey returned to Lansing.
McAlvey says that his sessions with Jones included prolonged hugs, the suggestion that he use handyman tools to increase his masculinity and questions about the size of his genitalia. There was also an episode of holding therapy where he reclined into the lap of his supposedly ex-gay counselor for an hour. The goal, according to McAlvey, was to get comfortable with his own manliness by “feeling the strength” and “smelling the smell” of another man.
Today, McAlvey is “out” and has accepted his sexual orientation.
“I think it does a lot of damage to peoples mental health, said McAlvey. If I had had a fair representation (of gay life) I could have avoided a lot of suffering.”
Masters and Johnson
For decades, anti-gay organizations have gleefully pointed to Masters & Johnson’s 1979 book, “Homosexuality in Perspective”, that claimed to cure homosexuality. Indeed, Dr. William H. Masters and Virgina E. Johnson, the husband and wife sex research team, went on Meet the Press on Sunday, April 22, 1979, to discuss their finding that homosexuals could be converted into heterosexuals.
The book has since been used by the so-called “ex-gay” industry to “prove” gays could go straight, if they just tried hard enough.
In his groundbreaking new book, “Masters of Sex”, author Thomas Maier discovered through investigative reporting that the results of Masters & Johnson’s study were entirely fabricated. Virginia Johnson acknowledged that the results were fake. She had actually argued in 1978 that book should never have seen the light of day – but it was already to late in the publishing process to undo the damage.
One can not overstate the importance of Maier’s findings. They undo the very underpinnings of the so-called “ex-gay” therapy movement, further showing that there is no scientific evidence or data to support the outdated idea that gay people can become heterosexual through therapy.
Indeed, many people who have undergone such “treatment” claim the experience was harmful and that they were psychologically damaged. The American Psychiatric Association says that attempts to change sexual orientation can lead to “anxiety, depression and self-destructive behavior.”

PFOX Wants Richard Cohen In The Schools
Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays (PFOX) is teaming up with anti-gay legal groups to intimidate GLBT campus organizations in high schools, colleges and universities. They are threatening to sue if these organizations don’t distribute literature featuring the bizarre theories of Richard Cohen.
It is hard to believe, but Cohen is the former President of PFOX. They still promote his books and training sessions. His writings appear on PFOX’s website. And, if you ask for a speaker – they will likely send you Mr. Cohen – who was expelled for life from the American Counseling Association.
If PFOX tries to get into your school, simply show administrators this clip of Cohen from the documentary, “Chasing the Devil.” It is clear, based on this clip – and his record – that disseminating PFOX’s material may put students at risk. Any responsible school that protects its students will not allow PFOX anywhere near campus.

Truth Wins Out Wayne Besen: "A powerful, all-encompassing campaign must be waged to remind Americans that we have thrived because of pluralism, separation of religion and state, belief in science and education as well as the freedom not to believe at all. It is time to stop playing the game on religious fanatics' turf, by their rules, using their language."

Let Maine and California be warnings. These radical fanatics truly believe they have the right to decide if you are equal. And to pass laws to keep people in their place. We must create an America where such ideas are anathema and antithetical to the national spirit and character.

Why is it legal to put civil rights up for a popular vote? MD's Supreme Court denied our lawsuit because we (gays) were "not without the resources to win legislatively," yet when we do, our rights can be revoked by popular vote.
