We achieve wines of authenticity by working with nature to showcase the true flavors of the grapes. Ty Caton personally manages the entire winemaking process, from planting the vines, to farming the grapes, to making the wine. By using exclusively estate grown grapes he is able to have complete control over the process... and personally tend to the wine from soil to glass. His acute awareness of the land enables him to make wines that show the great potential of the vineyard site.

Ty Caton’s philosophy is that wine is a natural product and should be treated as such. His winemaking uses limited intervention, which allows the wines to speak for themselves and import the true expression of the vineyard. He ferments with wild yeast that naturally occurs in the grapes so that the wines are manipulated the wines as little as possible. As a winemaker and grape grower he strives to produce the ‘wow factor’ by creating wines that are bold, highly extracted and beautifully structured. Ty Caton believes that blending is an art form and uses master blending techniques to combine different grape varieties and clones to create wines with many layers of complexity in aroma and flavor. By allowing the grapes to show their true character and enhancing it through blending, Ty Caton is forging a new definition of quality in winemaking.

Located on the western slopes of the Mayacama Mountains, the Caton Vineyard is a rugged setting ideally situated to grow some of the premier grapes in Sonoma Valley. The vineyard is blessed with an ideal climate with warm sunshine during the day and cool breezes in the evening. The 40 acre vineyard is spread out over 1...07 acres of steeply contoured hillsides that are as unique as the wines they produce. The vineyard is divided into 21 blocks, each defined by different sun exposure, soil type, incline, and altitude that varies over 300 feet. Each block is planted with the grape variety that is best suited to the specific conditions. The blocks are hand harvested and vintned individually to retain the distinct character of the vineyard and create expressive wines with distinct terroir.

The Caton Vineyard is made up of layers of volcanic soil with rocks that lie just below the surface, creating resistance for the vines as their roots search for nutrients in the soil. This stresses the vines, which creates smaller grapes with thicker skins and more concentrated flavors, essential to producing the beautifully expressive and extracted wines of Ty Caton Vineyards.

The Caton Vineyard is certified sustainable and we are committed to our stewardship of the land. It is our firm belief that by respecting the land and not intervening more than necessary in the growing process, the grapes become a distinctive expression of the vineyard.
