I need to better understand the SHIP insurance benefits. We opted to pay for SHIP in addition to our family's Kaiser insurance and thought we were fully covered. My daughter got very sick lat Friday. The Ashe Center is not open over the weekends. She called the Nurse hotline over the next two days. On Sunday it wa...s determined that she probably had strep and needed to see a doctor. But WHERE TO GO??? The hotline nurses gave me urgent care centers 5-10 miles away. My freshman doesn't have a car. We finally had her walk down the UCLA Med Ctr ER, even though we knew it wasn't a true emergency. Thankfully she was seen and has received medication, but now I wonder whether any of this was covered by SHIP? How are we billed? What do students do on the weekends??? What does SHIP cover? I searched their website and found minimal information for our situation. Students need medical options 24/7. Please enlighten and advise for the future. Thank youRead More

just heard about the outrageous
tuition hike from my daughter! Now I have only weeks to find an extra $585 so
that she can stay in school. Why haven’t I heard about this before? What's the point of having this page titled UCLA "Parents" when all that is posted is fluff! Especially in today's economy, I doubt I'm not the ...only parent who doesn't have that much money or the additional $1,334 hanging around. Thanks for the warning!Read More

I told my daughter she should have accepted at UC Berkeley so we could save money on going back and forth to Davis. JUST KIDDING!!! We love UCLA but I so glad we started saving for college when she was a baby. I'm a state worker with a 15% pay cut and 3 furlough days per month. It's tough and I've heard the state worker cuts are going to get worse this year. HELP!!!

Robert Feldman has been terrific in posting warnings about the impending fee hikes. I looked at some of the older posts, and he referenced an interview with Chancellor Block, dated 10/20 on this site. It has been in the newspapers for the past few weeks.

UCLA Parents As we take every measure to stay healthy through flu season, remember that there is a complete health care facility available to students and parents right on campus! In addition to visiting hours, the Ashe Center has phone advice for students. During work hours the number is 310-825-4073 (option 1, option 2). After hours, the Nurseline telephone service can be reached at (866) 704-9660.

Additionally, students can send a message for their Primary Care Provider or an online "Flu Care Provider" at https://i4w.ais.ucla.edu/ils/login.aspx?izAppId=edu.ucla.sdh.pncweb. For high risk students this online message should be answered within 3 hours during business hours. All students should receive a response within 48-72 hours.

UCLA Parents Academic Advice: To keep students on track towards graduation, we encourage students to meet with academic counselors on a regular basis. In the meanwhile, there are also fifteen ASK Peer Counseling Scholars available at five convenient locations across campus to answer student questions.

Hi Mary:

As you can see from the limited hours of our ASK Peer Counseling Scholars, these student workers are simply an informal supplement to the myriad of other counseling options offered on campus. For more information about our other counseling options, read this article in the most recent issue of Bruinlink: http://www.bruinlink.ucla.edu/wp/academics_november09/.

Please feel free to call our helpline at (310) 794-6737 if you have any additional questions or would like additional details.
