MERCED, Calif. - The University of California, Merced, has selected veteran TV journalist Lester Holt of NBC to deliver the keynote address at Commencement 2010.

UC Merced Question of the Day: What is your favorite Merced-area restaurant?

Jose Godinez Commencement speaker is a joke. No disrespect to Mr. Holt, but the planning committee was just being plain lazy.

UC Merced Question of the Day: What inspires you?

The next Mind, Technology and Society lecture series talk will be delivered by UC Merced adjunct professor Paul Maglio, senior manager of Service Systems Research at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose.
His lecture, "From Cognitive Science to Service Science: Distributed Cognition in System Administration," will... address understanding system administration, examining the movement of representational state across media in a system administrator's environment.
Troubleshooting large computer systems is often highly collaborative, Maglio says. Because these systems consist of complex infrastructures with many interdependent components, expertise is spread across people and organizations. Those who administer such systems are faced with cognitive and social challenges, including the establishment of common ground and coordination of attention, as they troubleshoot in collaboration with peers and others.
"I will put this analysis of system administration in the context service science, which is the study of how people, technologies, and other resources interact to create mutual value," he said.
The talk will begin at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in the Chancellor's Conference Room, KL 232. It is free and open to the public.
Maglio's research group at IBM encompasses social, cognitive, computer, and business scientists who aim to understand how people work together and with technology to create value. He holds thirteen patents and has published extensively in computer science, cognitive science, and business. He has a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from MIT and a Ph.D. in cognitive science from UC San Diego.
The MTS lecture series is made possible by a generous gift from the Glushko-Samuelson Foundation. For information: ckello@ucmerced.edu
