Human Resource Assistant Manager Bob Lael was named UIS Employee of the Year for 2009 during the 27th annual celebration. Lael is known for always being the first person to arrive at the office in the morning.

The Rick and Dona McGraw family of Springfield has donated one of only 15 bronze cast of an original Abraham Lincoln life mask to the University of Illinois Springfield. The original plaster mold was taken of Lincoln's face by sculptor Clark Mills on February 11, 1865.
UIS junior women's basketball forward/center Susan Coryell spent two months of her summer break volunteering in Ghana, West Africa at a military teaching hospital. She served as a nurse helping to change bandages and care for patients.
