Coach Roy Williams, one of the most respected, successful, and dominant basketball coaches in the nation, had an unlikely rise to the Hall of Fame and a career that boasts the highest winning percentage among all active college coaches. In his new book Hard Work: My Life on and Off the Court, for the first time Williams tells the story of his life that few people know, from his turbulent family life as a child to the North Carolina Tar Heels' National Championship victory in 2009.

In the season finale of UNC-TV’s statewide literary series, North Carolina Bookwatch, with D.G. Martin, premiering Sunday, January 10, at 5 PM, Coach Williams speaks candidly of his past, his passions, his inspirations, and the coaching philosophy behind one of college basketball's most successful programs. Williams also recounts the determination that took him from a small home in the mountains of North Carolina to the very pinnacle of coaching success.

Currently the head coach of the UNC Tar Heels Men’s Basketball team, Roy Williams has won two NCAA Championships with the Tar Heels and brought his teams (both UNC and Kansas) to seven Final Fours. Inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2007, he ranks first in the country in winning percentages among active coaches. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, he rose from Assistant Coach at UNC to Head Coach at Kansas, where he coached the Jayhawks for fifteen years before returning to North Carolina in 2004. During his career, he has coached nineteen first-round NBA draft picks, four National Players of the Year, thirteen first-team All-Americas, and seven conference Players of the Year.

Jill McCorkle, a master of the short story whose work has been compared to that of Alice Munro and Lorrie Moore, is a writer whose characters insist on our immediate and total attention. In Going Away Shoes, her first collection in eight years, she yields eleven new stories bristling with her signature wit and weight.

One way or the other, all of these stories are about women looking love in the face without flinching. Some of them are confronting the reality of domestic disruption; others are simply flirting with the possibilities—and dangers—of change. From the first story, about a modern-day Cinderella contemplating escape, to the last, "Me and Big Foot," an idyll about finding the perfect prince, McCorkle's characters make mistakes but aren't interested in hiding behind them. They get divorced or quit their jobs or tell people to step aside, and they move on.

In an all-new episode of UNC-TV’s statewide literary series, North Carolina Bookwatch, with D.G. Martin, premiering Sunday, December 27, at 5 PM, McCorkle shares her new collection, the work of a great storyteller who knows exactly how—and why—to pair longing and laughter.

Jill McCorkle is the author of eight previous books—three story collections and five novels—five of which have been selected as New York Times Notable Books. She is the winner of the New England Book Award, the John Dos Passos Prize for Excellence in Literature, and the North Carolina Award for Literature. She teaches writing at North Carolina State University and lives with her husband in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
