Melissa Anyone in Minnesota (near the Twin Cities) who wants to get together and fight local governments to keep chickens, let me know. Just had to move 5 laying hens out to my in-laws farm as it turned out to be illegal in my rural small town.

Can't you please spare 60 seconds today to help push the signature count up over 500 so it can be presented to the city council? We're so very close. Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the signatures, and the great comments to boot. I see the pros and cons to having the signatures sourced locally. The whole "you must have 500 signatures" seems terribly arbitrary in and of itself, so whether they're local or foreign seems to be in the same vein. Only 19 more to go!

Merry Ann at 10:21pm July 3
Well, Billings is NOT allowed. yet

Merry Ann Peters There is a group forming in Billings, Montana interested in backyard chickens. First meeting planned for this coming Thursday. Love some advice on first steps and beyond. thanks!

Urban Chickens Dallas Morning News is working on a story about folks who raise backyard (urban) chickens. They're looking for Texans to interview for the article. If you're a Texan who wants to talk to DMN, send a tweet to @DMN_TheodoreKim http://twitter.com/DMN_TheodoreKim

How about Bay Area folks? I know a lot of people doin' it in the city.
Urban Chickens at 3:03pm July 2
yes, lots of us doin' it in the SF Bay Area, but I think Theodore's wanting to do a Dallas-specific story :)

Monique Watts Buffalo City Council's Legislation committee met today and opened the floor for public comments on our proposed ordinance amendment allowing chickens to be kept in the City of Buffalo. The audience, which at one point was asked for a show of hands of those in support, was overwhelmingly in favor of passing the amendment. Only a few who spoke opposed, most were in favor. The final vote will be next Tuesday. Based on today's comments it seems likely to pass. The ordinance will allow for up to 5 hens, no roosters. There is a $25 permit fee and a 20 day waiting period while neighbors are notified and have chance to comment. If no objections, a city Animal Control Officer then has 45 days to inspect coop/run to ensure it is 20 feet from a window or door of a dwelling, 5 feet from each side property line and 18 inches from rear property line. Pretty restrictive for city lots, but it is a start.
Urban Chickens at 5:11pm June 30
It's a great start! lots of regulations, but seems it'll help to ensure responsible ownership. nice going!
Bannatyne at 8:28pm June 30
This really is a great start. The main thing here is to get it passed and then after time you can ask for changes to occur, but just to get the chickens in ther first place is so great! Yeah!! I'll wait to hear how it goes next week.

Lori Watson Tonight I won a variance to the ordinance banning farm animals, including chickens, on my 3/4 of an acre (usually allowed for 5 acres or more) in Walled Lake, Michigan. It was my 3rd time in front of the zoning board...the 3rd time really is a charm. Tonight I was armed with my digital voice recorder (in addition to my coop plans, info on composting manure, and articles about urban chicken farming) and brought recordings of road noise, the frogs from my backyard pond, my neighbors dogs barking and the sounds of 18 chickens quietly clucking...MUCH quieter than any other noises, easing the fears of a disruption to my neighbors. Now, I'm off to buy some chickens and to build my coop!

Potter Dee This coming Tuesday, in Buffalo NY, 2pm 13th floor of City Hall, the common council will be discussing chicken legislation.

Habitat Tractor. Forget the "IKEA" shelters.
Cont'd - Our local Habitat for Humanity Store had some plywood furring strips 3/4"x 1-1/2" x 8'-0 for $1.00 a piece. As far as plans not needed (can't believe people are selling plans, share them), with a power miter saw, brad nailer and some basic geometry. Using a 3'-0" module for the section of tractor first building 2 each 3'-0" x 8'-0" panels with intermediate supports at 32". Cover with 36" wide chicken wire. Then form a triangle with the panels and a 36" cross braces across the bottom. Cover the ends with chicken wire. Now used your preference to locate the opening. For the 1'-0" elevated roost use the drops from the 36" cuts of the 8'-0" cut the 24" pieces install and then cover with 3/8 x 3/8 wire fabric makes a good roost. do forget to glue all your wood to wood connections.
You do not need a lot of fancy tools and can make the cuts with a hand miter box and use screws on the connections and a hand stapler for the wire, harder

Jeffrey L. Nolen For all the posts on building habitats for your chickens, here is a resource that not only saves you money but gives back to the community. In most areas, for me it's Birmingham AL, and LaGrange GA, Habitat for Humanity has "Outlet Stores" for building materials. I have materials to build several "habitats". When the Chicks were small and out of the brooder, I fashioned a very simple unit by assembling used Window Screens for $1.00 a piece, plus a roll of Duct Tape and some self drilling sheet metal screws. Before the anal retentives get excited with the size of the screen wire, this is more of a transition habitat until the Habitat Tractor. Our local Habitat, had some plywood furring strips 3/4"x 1-1/2" x 8'-0 for $1.00 a piece. As far as plans not needed, with a power miter saw, brad nailer and some basic geometry. Using a 3'-0" module for the section of tractor first building 2 each 3'-0" x 8'-0" panels with intermediate supports at 32". Plus a 1'-0" elevated roost.

Urban Chickens I heard chickens bawking this morning... from a neighbor's backyard! So nice to hear the urban chicken movement spreading and adding its notes to the symphony of urban life.
Lori at 9:35pm June 23
My girls are only loud for about 60 seconds after they lay an egg. They come out and need to announce to the others that they layed. Its pretty funny ! They go bawk bawk bawk ! I love these girls so much I can't even believe this attachment !How can yyou love a chicken ? Just spend some time holding one and it falls asleep in your lap !

Megan at 6:52am June 24
I was walking in my neighborhood today and heard chickens clucking instead of dogs barking. what a difference a few years make!

Urban Chickens Well look at this: someone built a coop out of IKEA furniture parts. Very clever (and you can do it, too)

Urban Chickens what a fun little video!

Urban agriculture is one of the best things that individuals can do to become more sustainable, reduce their energy footprint, and have fun outside!! Legalizing hens in urban areas is a great way to help people start to produce their own, homegrown, freerange omelettes.
Monique at 3:17pm June 19
Stay tuned - ordinance has been introduced into council in Buffalo and should go to vote mid July
Bannatyne at 3:07pm June 20
Is this from Canada? Very fun. I'm really trying to up the # of signatures on my local petition. Hopefully it's closer to being legal than it might seem!

Urban Chickens Be sure to watch Nightline on ABC tonight (11:30p ET/PT). There's a segment on urban chickens scheduled to air! http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/

Urban Chickens You know, if chickens had been legal in the first place, none of this would've happened. (well, maybe not) beep! beep! beeeeeeeeep!

In a landmark First Amendment decision that will disappoint drivers everywhere, the Washington Court of Appeals has ruled that honking a car horn is not necessarily protected speech. As you might expect, the case arose from a dispute about chickens....

BOOOOO for HOAs!!!!! :D It was one condition for moving into our current home and we hadn't even considered chickens then... it was all about avoiding the snobbery! Glad we did - oh - we still got SOME snobbery, but nothing that would stand up in court. ;)
