Have you guys talked with anyone at the League of American Bicyclists? Just curious what they suggest.

These trends have been shown in Europe, Australia and other US cities as well. More people on bikes, more trips by bike, fewer fatalities.

Aside from this, it really is a slippery slope we're walking on now. If cost is the motivator, then i'm sure we'll get rid of carbon race wheels next and $8000 bikes to further level the playing field. Similarly, riders that don't want to bring an extra bike to nationals could attach clip-on aerobars to their road bike (something i've done for years before buying my TT bike this summer). They'd get 95% of the benefit right there. The remaining 5% is small enough that it's not worth talking about (at that point, you should worry about if you've been feeding enough, if the wind hasn't changed, if you're spending too much time on the front, etc). By doing this, we'll be losing a lot of the fun for a very small increase in fairness.

As I'm reading it now, the hilarity of the situation is that I'm pretty sure I could use my TT frame if i replaced the aerobars with drop bars and used mass-start legal wheels - so the overall difference between me and someone else would be the $100 helmet and the $25 clip on aerobars (ebay prices).
