UU World : Kimberly French profiles poet Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno, a UU, whose new book chronicles her passage through grief after her daughter's murder. "For a long time, I could barely read a book," Bonanno tells her. "But for me to write any book, I had to write this book first. It was the mountain that stood in the way of t...he mountain." http://www.uuworld.org/life/articles/151718.shtml?f

Members of UUA congregations receive a subscription as a benefit of membership - but if you are not currently a member of a congregation, you can get the magazine in other ways.

A year's subscription is only $14. http://www.uuworld.org/subscriptions/?f

Even if you don't live near or cannot participate in a local UU congregation, you can be a member of the UUA's "church by mail," the Church of the Larger Fellowship. Hi Marta! I'm in Kentucky too; although too far from Lexington to attend there. Still it is nice to know there are like minded individuals here. Sometimes it is easy to feel isolated in a small town.

UU World : Meg Barnhouse writes, "I have a suggestion. Let's stick something onto the end of every Principle that will stop people from smiling and nodding comfortably as they are read. Instead of adding 'in the bathtub' or 'between the sheets,' how about attaching 'beginning in our homes and congregations'?
Then we'd be faced w...ith affirming things like 'the goal of . . . peace, liberty, and justice for all, beginning in our homes and congregations.'"

Meg, I think you hit the target again! Living our principles is much tougher than just reciting them. When I hold myself accountable by finding the very personal responsibility, that's where the "rubber meets the road"! That's when I am truly called to be my best UU-self. Thanks (again) for the reminder.

UU World : Don Skinner reports that ten-year-old Will Phillips, whose family attends the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fayetteville, Ark., refused to stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance in his fifth-grade classroom. Will explains: "At the end of the Pledge it says 'liberty and justice for all.' But there isn't justice ...for people who are gay. And there's a lot of racism and sexism still, and there are lots of people who can't get health care."

My office administers the UUA Health Plan. It is a multiple employer federal ERISA plan open to all employees of uu congregations and related organizations working a minimum of 750 hrs annually. In order to offer insurance to UUists, we would have to create an insurance comnpany and register in every state - not quite our mission. Great article, though. Thanks, Jane. Rev. UU World : Michelle Deakin reports that the Unitarians in Székelykeresztúr, Transylvania, surprised their American partner church, the First Parish in Concord, Mass., with a gift of $10,500 for their capital campaign. "I was just floored," said the Rev. Gary Smith. "They live in what is mostly a barter economy without a lot of ...cash. It's just stunning generosity that speaks volumes about our relationship with them."

Folks, these people sacrificed much and traveled far to give a surprise gift in this amount to the Capital Campaign. I cannot imagine how horrified they would be to have it refused. As if they don't already know how little they have--do we then reinforce how little we value what they have to offer and how much they sacrificed to achieve it? Sheesh... See More. We do take ourselves a bit seriously, don't we? @Barbara, a gift of service, recognition, or a unique handmade gift would be an excellent recompense. How about an artisan-made chalice or other artwork for their church to commemorate their contribution in perpetuity?

A loving gift freely given. There is a history and a story behind it (read the whole article). It would be horribly insulting to not accept the gift. I agree... something handmade such as a quilt or a chalice made by members of the church In Concord would be a way to thank and honor their generosity
