Symbolism of the Seven Fishes
Southern Italians around the world celebrate Christmas Eve with a Feast of Seven Fishes - Festa dei Sette Pesci . The feast is also known as La Vigilia - The Vigil.
The menu typically consists of seven different seafood dishes, but can have 9, 11 or 13 different dishes. This celebration i...s a commemoration of the wait, Vigilia di Natale, for the midnight birth of the baby Jesus.
Tradition and History
The tradition of eating seafood on Christmas Eve dates from the medieval Roman Catholic tradition of abstinence – usually refraining from meat or dairy. As no meat or butter could be used in preparations, Catholics would eat fish, which was typically fried in oil.
The relevance of the number “7” has a number of theories: 1. 7 may refer to the number of Sacraments in the Roman Catholic Church or 2. 7 may represent perfection: the traditional Biblical number for divinity is three, and earth for four, and the combination of these numbers, seven, represents God on Earth, or Jesus Christ.
The Feast started in Italy and the most famous dish is Baccala, which is salted cod fish. Dishes can include anchovies, sardines, smelts, eels, squid, octopus, shrimp, mussels and clams.
Menu Ideas:
Shrimp Frico
Arugula salad
Tomato and basil salad
Antipasti platter – zucchini, yellow squash, red onions, olives, sliced salami, sausage, cheeses
Bread with dipping oil
Pizza – Margarita, Capricola
Linguine with clams, stock, garlic, chopped parsley
