Viva La Voce Puppet Opera
Viva La Voce Puppet Opera performed Die Fledermaus
Thirsty puppets, jolly opera singers, vengeful bats, and graceful waltzers converge in 19th century Vienna to bring this Strauss opera to life.
Opera has never seemed less stuffy and randy puppets run rampant in this high octane production.
Location: Flynn Space, Burlington Vermont
Who Says Opera Isn't Sexy?
You’ll never watch the Queen of the Night aria in quite the same way…

Vancouver Opera - 2008 Season !!! (better video version)
Interview with General Director James Wright discussing the new 2008 opera season in Vancouver. For more information about the upcoming exciting productions, go to VancouverOpera.ca on the web.
Aretha Franklin - Greatest Singer
OK, maybe not “bizarre” opera video – but Rolling Stone just named Aretha the greatest singer (ever?), and I’ve always been fond of her, ehem, version of Nessun Dorma. I saw this live and at the moment it occurred it was spellbinding. VO
Yma Sumac - Gopher Mambo
Yma Sumac died on Saturday, so in honour of her, here’s a little video tribute. If you take your opera seriously, this is a singer you MUST get to know.
It’ll serve as a good antidote.
Opera Jawa
For Halloween something disturbing but also sort of fascinating from Indonesia: Opera Jawa
(Garin Nugroho, Indonesia, 2006)
Setyo and Siti live a peaceful life as husband and wife, selling earthenware in their village. But when Setyo is called away on business, a flirtatious butcher, Ludiro, takes advantage of Siti’s loneliness to seduce her. Tempted by song and dance, Siti initially refuses his advances but acquiesces in a moment of weakness, setting the stage for an epic battle between the two men. Located in lush forests and on pristine beaches of Java, director Garin Nugroho bases his deeply imagistic and dazzling visual narrative on the “The Abduction of Sita,” from the Hindu epic, The Ramayana.
Fat Lady Sings - and its over - for bananas
Japanese opera singer Kumiko Mori sings the praises of bananas as a way to lose weight – the Japanese public freaks out and the country suffers a banana shortage.

Caterpillar Opera
I just don’t know where to start with this one. I’m speechless.
Anybody know what music this is? VO
Bryn Terfel meets Glam Metal (Tigertailz)
Submitted by Fan Tracey Flattes – a tribute to Welsh Glam Metal band Tigertailz and bassist Pepsi Tate.
Got a Bizarre Opera video you’d like to see? Let us know!
Abandoning the old adage, ne’er the twain shall meet; the two worlds of opera and glam rock come together on the new single from world famous bass baritone Bryn Terfel, soprano and West End star Shân Cothi, Serendipity Choir, the Lucy J. Morgan Orchestra and notorious glam metal band, Tigertailz. Though both genres have long shared a love of flamboyant outfits, startling hairstyles and over the top stage productions, I Believe is the first time the two have united to bring a song into such vibrant life.
I Believe aims to raise awareness and money for the registered charity Amser Justin Time, set up to provide care and support for pancreatic cancer patients and their families in Wales, as well as funding research into the disease itself.
Tigertailz co-founder and bassist Justin Smith (Pepsi Tate as was to those who spent their adolescence punching the air to the bands commercially and critically acclaimed albums) turned TV director and editor, sadly died from pancreatic cancer last year at the age of 42. His widow, Shân Cothi, is heading up the charity partly in tribute to her husband, but also to help save others from the suffering that both she and Justin had to endure.
Meanwhile, Justin’s musical contribution to this track lives on with his original bass parts remaining fully intact on this re-recording of the Tigertailz original.

Opera for 100 smart rabbits
Nabaz’mob, opera for 100 smart rabbits
by Antoine SCHMITT and Jean-Jacques BIRGE
Filmed by Françoise Romand
http://nabazmob.free.fr
A coproduction Violet – Web Flash Festival,
created at the Centre Georges Pompidou on May 27th 2006
after an original idea by Guylaine Monnier
Choreography and music by Antoine Schmitt and Jean-Jacques Birgé
100 Nabaztag smart rabbits, brought by their owners, did meet at Centre Pompidou, in the same spirit of the flashmobs, to all play together an opera specially composed by Antoine Schmitt et Jean-Jacques Birgé.
Inviting John Cage, Steve Reich, Conlon Nancarrow and György Ligeti, this musical and choreographic partition in three movements, transmitted via wi-fi, plays on the tension between the music ensemble communion and individual behavior to create a strong and involved showpiece.
Computer indiscipline is the subject of this opera, a desire to be together and the difficulty to do it.
Yes! The Swedes Take the Lead in Fabulously Odd Operas!!!
Crucible Studio and Helsinki Skaala Opera collaborated to produce a multimedia opera performance on the life of Alan Turing (1912-1954), a heroic wartime code-breaker and pioneer of computer science. Turing Machine DVD is a live recording of this performance at Korjaamo, “the Helsinki Cultural Factory”.
The Turing Enigma and the 3D scenography for Helsinki Skaala Opera’s Turing Machine are realized by the Crucible Studio team as an experimental production for the EU Commission funded research project, SALERO.
The Turing Machine opera, composed by Eeppi Ursin and Visa-Pekka Mertanen, is comprised mainly of new electronic music and realtime sampling of old and new material. The libretto is based on the play “Turing” by Miko Jaakkola, which tells the strange life story of this exceptionally talented and complex person. The 3D visualization and digital scenography is by Merja Nieminen and the Crucible Studio team.

OK, I have no idea what this is, but I simply love the freakiness of it all!
Spontaneous Opera
What do people do when they are happy? Sing opera of course! Here a new artistic movement was spawned with “Spontaneous Opera”—a do-it-yourself creation of music and lyric all at once, in multiple voices. The rage has yet to sweep the nation.
Enough Muppets, moppets this week....
One of my favorite arias edited nicely to one of my favorite movies: Leon: The Professional, with a very young Natalie Portman (making her debut I think). Great film, great opera. See one of them soon. VO
Beverly Sills on The Muppet Show Part 3 "Pigoletto"
The marvelous (and good-natured!)Beverly Sills and the pigs from the Muppet Show present the opera, “Pigoletto,” straight from the Muppetopolitan Opera. The muppets enthusiastically slaughter arias from operas such as Carmen and Die Walkure, while Miss Sills sings “Sempre Libera” from La Traviata. Included is a high-note battle of the divas: Miss Piggy vs Miss Sills. One has to admire Frank Oz (as Miss Piggy) trying to out-sing Beverly Sills! (RIP, Beverly – we miss you!)

I saw that fantastic Norma and this production got me “hooked on opera... Read More”! At the age of 12 I bought every Joan Sutherland recording from a record store at Seymour and Granville Streets in Vancouver; David Y. H. Lui was the expert salesperson!
Congratulations to Dr. Irving Guttman, it was a wonderful experience to work with Irving at the Canadian Opera Company.
I hope there is a recording of this presentation that can be available for those of us who cannot attend. Thank you. (I live in Mexico)
