SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

At VZW we’re committed to doing and being our best. Through the Verizon Foundation’s Core Initiatives, we’re using technology to improve people’s lives by sparking literacy, lifelong learning, and success for the 21st century.
The Verizon Foundation made over $67 million in actual contributions in 2007, and issued over 3000 grants, including a $99,000 grant to fund a Native American program to help prevent domestic violence in California’s tribal communities, among others. We also focus our efforts on preventing domestic violence through our HopeLine program, which provides refurbished cell phones with full access to all emergency numbers to victims of domestic violence free of charge. We collected a total of 1.13 million old and no-longer-used wireless phones in 2008 through our long-running HopeLine® phone recycling and reuse program. Our participation in Call2Recycle™ helps the environment and E-rate by making it easy to recycle used batteries at any Verizon Wireless retail location. In 2007 alone, VZW recycled 35 tons of batteries.
