From January 5 – January 30, 2010 the Vermont Folklife Center will host the Art of Action: Shaping Vermont's Future through Art exhibit in our Vision and Voice Gallery. The Art of Action project commissioned visual artists to create suites of artwork that address issues identified by Vermonters as essential to our stat...e's future. The Art of Action is a partnership between the Vermont Arts Council and Lyman Orton and Janice Izzy.
Working with the Orton Family Foundation the Vermont Folklife Center conducted a series of interviews with the artists taking part in the Art of Action project. These interviews are accessible via cell phone and have been integrated into the exhibit to create a rich, multimedia experience.
Vermont Folklife Center will host an opening for the exclusive Middlebury showing of the Art of Action on Friday, January 8 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. Several participating artists will be on hand, and the public is invited to enjoy remarks by Brent Björkman, Director of the Vermont Folklife Center; Bill Roper, President of the Orton Family Foundation; and Alex Aldrich, Director of the Vermont Arts Council.

In the mid-70s VFC founder Jane Beck commissioned this cradle from VT/NH Abenaki basket maker Newt Washburn. When VFC archivist Andy's first daughter, Thalia, was born, Jane passed this wonderful cradle on to him. Andy being Andy, he promptly tripped over it and broke one of the rockers. It has since been repaired by S...herry Gould (a NH Abenaki basket maker and student of both Newt and Jeanne Brink) and her husband. And now it's time for Andy's second daughter, Zora's turn to use it!
Just one of the many small pleasures of being a folklorist...
