YMCA Offers Free Swim Lessons to Summer Day Campers

Instead of confining non-swimmers to the shallow end all summer long, we're teaching all children to learn to swim as part of their YMCA summer day camp experience. This First Coast News clip tells the story. http://tr.im/siSp

Hmmm... I specifically remember being in summer day camp in 1990 or 1991 at the YMCA that's around University blvd. and we had swim lessons every morning. EVERYONE did. Then in the afternoon at Wolfson High School we had free swim. Why is the YMCA saying this is new? Did they stop the lessons sometime after '91?

A lot has changed in the last 20 years. Somewhere along the way, we began swim testing all children upon their first visit to a YMCA pool. Up until now, we put non-swimming campers in PFDs and they had to stay in the shallow end. Now, we provide structured swim lessons to children who would need PFDs so they are swimming like fish by the end of the summer.
