Video Game Voters Network Boston mayor to partner with ESRB on ratings awareness campaign http://bit.ly/msO5e
Source: bit.ly
He has been one of the video game industry's most aggressive critics in the past, but GamePolitics has learned that Boston Mayor Thomas Menino (D) will partner with the ESRBon a public service ad campaign designed to raise parental awareness of the video game rating system.
Ryan at 2:25pm May 28
I'm liking this for more than just the obvious ratings system. People have bitched and whined about the horrible things media, movies, tv, and videogames have presented to children. Yeah it should be obvious that GTA is not a kids game. They said the same thing about hot McDonald's coffee, and yet someone still sued them stupid cause they weren'... Read Moret warned. But not just that, but the ESRB rating system has been a key component defending them from people who want to restrict sales and content. Take a look at California's history: they try to enforce a separate rating system that would mislabel thousands of games as violent and hazardous, and it was shot down thanks to ESRB.

Stand by whatever you want, stop regurgitating ignorance and misplaced stereotypes as if you were sharing something relevant. You're only contributing to the real problem: misinformation.

So then authors like Stephen King shouldn't write gory books nor should comic book artists draw the comics so risque? Where do you draw the line? If you don't like certain "T&A/gore" games, don't buy them and don't you dare tell me that I can't buy them. Your rights end where mine begin. I will fight to the death the game designers right to publish what ever they feel like publishing and their first amendment rights.

As you read this, your Congressperson may be considering co-sponsoring the newest regulatory assault on video games — Rep. Joe Baca's (D-CA) bill H.R. 231, "The Video Game Health Labeling Act." Baca's bill mandates that video games rated Teen or higher receive the following warning label:
Ryan at 9:06pm May 1
How about the fact that this label about violence would be applied to all games rated T or more, regardless of there's any violence in them. Or that over 12 nationwide cases similar to this have been thrown out due to 1st amendment violation. Or that there's already been a very successful rating system in place, called ESRB, that's been used for years and is much more descriptive and useful than any label like the proposed one. Oh I can keep going, but I'll stop for now.
