Village Health Works (VHW) is dedicated to the principle that all people, including the most oppressed and impoverished, are entitled to the highest standards of health care in their pursuit of happy and productive lives. VHW’s first project is to design, build, and operate a model community health clinic in Kigutu, Burundi.
Burundi is a country of both great beauty and great tragedy. It is a landlocked East African country of over 8 million people that shares borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. At 27,830 sq km, Burundi is slightly smaller than the state of Maryland.
In 2006 the World Bank reported that Burundi is the world's poorest country, so in addition to creating and strengthening health care facilities and services, we are securing clean water and safe food, and providing health education and economic opportunity. The two key ideas of our approach are community empowerment and community partnership. Through education and practical training, community members are empowered not only to participate in VHW projects but also to organize and manage them.
