  • stephen john nash was born on february 7, 1974, in johannesburg, south africa.

  • steve was born into an athletic family: his father, john, played semi-professional soccer and his mother, jean, played netball (think basketball without the running). after two years in south africa, the nash family immigrated to canada.

  • growing up in british columbia, canada, steve played multiple sports, including lacrosse, soccer, hockey, rugby, and basketball.

  • steve went on to play college basketball at santa clara where he graduated with a degree in sociology.

  • steve was drafted 15th overall by phoenix in 1996.

  • after two years, steve was traded to dallas where he flourished before returning to phoenix via free agency.

  • steve went on to win back-to-back mvp awards (2005-2006 season), becoming only the second point guard to do so other than magic johnson.
