Volunteers of America Greater Sacramento & Northern Nevada A big thank you to Standard Pacific Homes President Jon Nicholson and staff (and their friends and families), for giving up their Saturday to spruce up the apartments of several of our clients as part of HomeAid Sacramento's annual "Painting a Better Tomorrow" volunteer event! Armed with brushes and rollers, the crew brightened interior walls and brought forth exterior smiles! You all rock!

"In June, Rhoda Serrano and her husband, Edwin, both lost their casino jobs in downtown Reno. Serrano had worked in marketing, while Edwin was a maintenance man. 'When we were working, we had cars and everything. Now, everything is gone,' she said. 'We are starting from scratch.'"
Thankfully, our Family Shelter in Reno ...(which celebrates its one-year anniversary tomorrow) was there as a safety net for this family of four. Read the entire story below:Read More

Volunteers of America Greater Sacramento & Northern Nevada Cheers to Reno RTC Access Driver Jim Howard, who was heralded on a recent KOLO TV newscast as a guardian angel for saving the life of one of our Sierra Manor apartment residents, whose wheelchair fell into a drainage ditch. Howard jumped in and kept Ray Moyle's head out of water until rescue crews arrived.

Volunteers of America Greater Sacramento & Northern Nevada Numbers can be deceiving - we're hearing that reports of elder abuse are down, but more than likely due to budget cuts throughout the organizations that take the complaints. What we know is that our Sacramento Senior Safe House is consistentl full – even with a high turnover due to our success at placing these individuals in permanent housing. There is a real need. The California Senate Office of Oversight and Outcomes says the number of complaints from ombudsmen are down more than 40 percent since budget cuts were enacted last year.

This just posted by News10 on the status of the 'Safe Ground' initiative: "The Safe Ground group, which had set up camp several times on private property at 12th and C streets before being evicted by police, will have a place to stay in about two weeks, according to Johnson. The group has elected to stay together and t...he mayor said funds from the city, nonprofit groups and private donors will enable 20 to 25 beds for Safe Ground.

The shelter will rely on a voucher system and will be operational until March, 2010."
