There's a new addition to the list of Vermont-made products: sticks. That's right those little pieces of wood we throw to our dogs are being packaged and sold far and wide.

If only there were some way to check on structures as they are used, see if they need repairs, fend off demolition. I guess not. One day they're in full use, the next day they have to come down. That's just the way it goes.

Sal DeMaio

Sal DeMaio I think that Mitch Wertlieb is a Redsox fan. I know he must be in terrific pain, but couldn't he have been a little more gracious in his world series coverage than to say only, and I parphrase: "It isn't all bad news for Redsox fans because the Celtics won their 6th in a row?" VPR and the New York Yankees, two winners.

Hey Sal, you know, I thought of you last night when the Yanks won (thanks to your profile pic!). Congrats. I am also a dyed-in-the-wool Sox fan, but I wanted to pass along to you what Mitch wrote to another listener this morning:

"I do like to have some good-natured fun with that rift from time to time...but you are quite correct that such a comment--however true--without a corresponding acknowledgment of the Yankees accomplishment is evidence of bias."

Mitch did issue a "mea culpa" at the end of Morning Edition this morning and gave credit where it's due to the Yankees,... Read More

Rich Nadworny's comments make an unfair comparison between Fairpoint, who is trying to provide broadband coverage throughout rural Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire, with Burlington Telecom with its concentrated, urban, coverage. As a satisfied Fairpoint DSL customer, I can point out that I was ignored by Verizon for y...ears. As I frequently see those Fairpoint employees outdoors rain or shine hooking up us rural folk, I am sure that their business situation would be significantly better if they had those concentrated customers of Burlington Telecom.Read More

HI Craig, I was talking in general about all of the services, actually. But you make a good point and it wasn't my intention to say FairPoint has no satisfied customers.

On the other hand, as a rural resident, I think you deserve better than DSL, frankly. And while it's good that Fair Point is a little better than Verizon on this, I don't think it's good enough.

The argument against connecting rural New England has always been that it doesn't make economic sense to wire up the hills. Maybe it doesn't for a privately owned company. But it does make sense from an economic development standpoint. And whether that's fiber or wireless, and whether it's FairPoint or BT, who cares. ... Read More

When you're able to connect as fast as someone in Burlington, let alone New York or Tokyo, then I'll be happy.

Hi Rich, I am fortunate in Eden where our DSL is perfectly fast enough for most non-video applications, including my home business needs. I can't imagine rural VT affording fiber to each home, At about $50 for both phone and DSL, what better option would I have ? By the way; Fairpoint DSL is more than a little better than dial-up on a Verizon phone connection!!
