Martin Arvebro was honored to be selected as one of two students to visit Blacksburg last year as part of a weeklong foreign exchange program with Virginia Tech.
His first day at Tech was on April 16, 2007.
The 28-year-old Swedish student was in McBryde Hall when he heard a "commotion" outside, police standing around with rifles, ambulance sirens blaring and students running toward buildings to get inside.
A year later, Arvebro, who will graduate from the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden, returned to Tech for the one-year anniversary.

Girls hit tennis balls as cicadas whir in the heat, familiar sounds for Heidi Miller as she gathers strength at a Shenandoah Valley camp before Virginia Tech’s start of classes Monday.
This place is a touchstone for Miller, 19, a camp counselor and tennis instructor at a rustic, all-girls camp where she has summered since she was 8.
This time, she also traveled three times a week to Harrisonburg for physical therapy for wounds inflicted in Seung-Hui Cho’s April 16 rampage when he killed 32 people on Tech’s campus.

Andrea Rojas and about 30 other Virginia Tech students spent two hours Sunday hunting for such unlikely spots to hang 300 of the hand-painted bells -- Ben's Bells.
And they can't wait for you to have them.
"When we hear the stories of people who actually find them, that's when it'll mean something," Rojas said.
Ben's Bells is a Tucson, Ariz.-based nonprofit group that aims to bring kindness and hope to people hit by tragedy.

Virginia Tech: One Year Later
As 11 a.m. approached, somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 people stood motionless atop lines meticulously surveyed and spray-painted on the Drillfield's grass. Most participants wore maroon and orange. They waited for the pass of an imaging satellite that they hoped would capture and communicate the message outlined by their collaborative stance: "VT thanks you."
