WalkJogRun Newsletter

We run this site in our spare time so to call it a monthly newsletter would be a stretch but we certainly try to send one each month. The newsletter is packed with tips for using the site, announcements about new features or things we think you'll be interested in related to Walking, Jogging or Running (or any of the other sports you do).

WalkJogRun At midnight tonight an update of the iPhone app will hit the appstore featuring a new pace picker that works with miles and kilometers and lets you toggle between them (converting automatically); a new weight picker for pounds or kilograms and a new "find routes by duration" for those of you following programs where you are looking for a 30 minute route for example instead of a set mileage.

Army Ten-Miler, which was run in the same heat that caused the cancellation of the Chicago Marathon two years ago (same day), ran out of water at mile 6, with about half the runners still to reach that point. It was oppressively hot and the run across the 14th Street Bridge at mile 8 felt like running across the Sahara Desert.

This is why I carry my own water I bought an amphipod belt and train with it and race with it. I am not relying on someone else to care about my well being

Hey Terry - I think you missed the point - if you don't care about the ads or don't mind minimizing them - don't pay, if you don't like them you now have an option of the price of a starbucks coffee or a pint of beer. If just 1% of our existing members upgraded I'd be able to work on this site full time and you'd see faster progress on things you're all asking for like Android apps, Blackberry support, training diaries and new features.

Hera Ma I started running about a month ago, after years of walking 10+ miles/day. Today I ran 8 miles in 1:10. Is that pretty good, or?? Having never been a runner, I don't know what is considered a decent speed, nor how much I should expect to increase by the week. Feedback welcome!

That's a very good pace! Keep up the good work. As for increasing your mileage, a 10% increase per week is the general rule to ensure you're doing it safely, but always listen to your body! I like to set a race and train for it with a plan so I know I'm doing it correctly. I'm currently training with a plan from HalHigdon.com. Plans usually include speed work to help increase speed as well.

Don't do speed workouts very well, give me a 6 hour run anyday! BUT, similar to above 3.5km warm up, 6 to 10 repeats of 800m, in a very big HOT park in Bangkok. Then jog back to work!

Yes, but not with a fever, a cold is OK. Having said that I ran a hilly half feeling unwell and fainted over the finish line out of it comletely and broke my tailbone! But I'm crazy. Go with your instinct. Perhaps pace someone slower than you and enjoy the scenery...?
