Walk San Francisco Saddened to hear about this incident.

www.sfexaminer.com
The number of pedestrian fatalities in The City continues to mount after a 70-year-old woman walking across Geary Boulevard at Ninth Avenue was killed Thursday morning after the driver of a white van struck her while making a left turn. It was the 23rd pedestrian fatality in San Francisco

Walk San Francisco This article looks at pedestrian safety and "jaywalking". The Netherlands legalized jaywalking a few years ago and there hasn't been a noticeable effect on pedestrian-auto collisions.

www.slate.com
Looking at any number of big-city dailies over the last few weeks, one might reasonably surmise that we are in the middle of a new public-health epidemic with an old name: jaywalking.

Walk San Francisco A new pedestrian safety report has been released today. Please take action. San Francisco has a pedestrian fatality rate that is 70% higher than the national average.

action.smartgrowthamerica.org
Thousands of Americans of all ages have been struck down in the simple act of walking. These "accidents" overwhelmingly occur on roads that are dangerous by design, with little or no provision for people on foot, in wheelchairs, or on a bicycle.

San Francisco is a very small and very congested city. I am not surprised. I was on the soapbox about this as a candidate for Mayor in 2007!

When I ran for Supervisor in District 6 in 2002 and attended an event covering D6 and D3, a factoid I heard that surprised me was that the pedestrian fatalities are clustered in Chinatown. The explanation we received was that it's counted as a pedestrian fatality if the pedestrian comes into any contact with a moving vehicle (even 3 MPH) then ... See Moresustains an injury resulting in death. So if my hubby's granny were visiting us and shopping for veggies along the crowded sidewalks of Chinatown (as Chinese grannies in their 80s still do, bless them), stepped off the crowded sidewalk and got barely bumped by a car but fell and broke her hip and did not survive the hospital stay, that would be counted as a pedestrian fatality caused by a vehicle. In other words, I think our higher numbers are almost unavoidable. I like that 80 year olds still walk in San Francisco. It makes us unique and IMHO far preferable to the suburbs where my grandpa in his 90s is pretty much stuck at home 100% of the time unless my parents drive him somewhere.

Walk San Francisco Many agree that the Market St. changes are working.

In a rare example of harmony in San Francisco, merchants, transit advocates and pedestrians have all expressed some degree of support for the much-ballyhooed experiment to restrict cars on Market Street that started last month. The current situation, which took effect Sept. 29 with the ba

Brian Dalton was walking down Van Ness Friday night when he saw a woman step into the path of an oncoming car. The driver, who had a green light, swerved, but his car crashed into her and came to a stop near the sidewalk.

Thanks for addressing this. I agree that Chuck is losing relevance (was he ever relevant?) nevertheless he needs to be called out.

Interesting to read some of the responses to his story - many claim that drivers are very courteous to pedestrians, who are at fault for walking in front of cars and expecting them to stop - as I'm writing this I'm listening to the news - in the East Bay an 11 year old was killed by a hit and run driver on her way to school...

Thanks for the warning. Most dangerous part walking to work this morning - having to walk into some streets as some corners were flooded knee-deep... But it also feels good to get wet, knowing there is a dry set of clothes waiting for you in the office :)
