David Domine

David Domine Has anyone hiked, or been near Bethel Ridge since all the snow has hit White Pass? How bad was it, thinking about doing Shell Rock on wednesday.

Washington Trails Association Hiking news you can use: a fee-free day, snow closes some passes and a popular road is repaired.

It's a mid-week day in November, but if you're game, next Wednesday is a great day to head out to the woods to check the new-fallen snow. In other news to file away until the spring, the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest has completed repairs on the Cascade River Road.

Don't get the whole fee-free on 11th. Why couldn't they do that on weekend?

Steven Payne It was great seeing a full work party on Poo Poo Point trail today! Make sure they get extra treats -- it was a rough morning up there!

Washington Trails Association A hike that is enjoyable and different in every season. In November,
the lake is just starting to freeze and is particularly beautiful. Be
prepared for ice and snow as you go, however!

Don't expect to find much heather growing along the shores of this pretty little subalpine lake. That ubiquitous mountain shrub is pretty hard to find on this hike. But what you can expect to see along the way are some mighty fine old cedars. ...

I LOVE this hike. Heather Lake beats up Lake 22 and steals its lunch money every time.

@Tommy; I hear rumor that the LO at Pilchuck has been damaged, or vandalized or weather damaged...It's been probably 10 years since I've been there.... what is it's condition?

Thanks Dan.

I'd forgotten just how crappy and confusing the map is.

It sounds amazing and would thoroughly enjoy it, but most full time college students can't just make plans off the tip of their hat. Thank you and I look forward to hearing back!

Washington Trails Association Why not hike in the rain?? Where to go, what to wear, and how to prevent hypothermia.

Source: www.wta.org
Hiking in the rain. It's probably not most people's first choice for hiking, but it can be a quite satisfying experience. Just ask Pam Roy. She writes about "Gray Getaways" in the November/December 2009 issue of Washington Trails magazine. Pam likes the solitude and ambiance of hiking in the rain. ...

Washington Trails Association Tips on how to find good hikes in November on WTA's website, and how to prepare for the weather.

After seeing a person snowboarding on the cover of Wednesday's Seattle Times, I can no longer deny that winter is right around the corner. The days are growing shorter, the mornings are colder and the trees are losing their leaves.

Washington Trails Association Hike of the Week: Enjoy solitude and quiet of this Olympic National Forest trail.
Towering old growth hemlock and fir provide the canopy and moss,
mushrooms and lichen cover the understory. Tunnel Creek is a good
choice on a rainy fall day.

Source: www.wta.org
Located within the 44,000-acre Buckhorn Wilderness, Tunnel Creek is one of the quietest trails in the Olympic rain shadow. Perhaps because it doesn't lead to a major lake or peak, this trail escapes the attention of many hikers. ...

This drainage, along with the Big Quil, have been my local stomping grounds since the early '80s when I worked for the USFS on fire/slash burn crews. We use to call the steep hillsides along lower Tunnel Creek "the Tunnel Vertical Units". I was on one of those units, packing a fire suppression pump, when St Helens blew - which left a sea of ... Read Moresummer USFS workers bewildered thinking someone was shooting off gigantic firecreackers in the Dose drainage next door.
It is indeed a very nice hike though definately on the back burner of attention these days. There was a time when we used to use Tunnel Creek to climb Mt Constance (avoiding the wicked Lake Trail), but this is probably discouraged now as bootlegging. Someday though, maybe we can extend the Tunnel Creek Trail down to near the Lower Big Quilcene Trailhead - during the next Renaissance of the USFS. I helped pack out a WTA Rapid Response Team last year from the TC shelter - thanks to all the hard work by these folks!!!!

At this time two years ago, Erin McKittrick and Bretwood Higman were hiking through a squall on Alaska’s Lost Coast, with rain pouring down in sheets and wind whipping sand and sea foam into the air. Between bursts, the sun shined on the ocean, backlighting the boulders strewn across the beach. ...

Washington Trails Association Do you miss accessing the trailheads and campgrounds along the washed out section of the Icicle Creek Road? The Forest Service is gathering ideas, questions and concerns about replacing the road, and you can be a part of the process.

Source: www.wta.org
The Forest Service has begun the public process for restoring access to one of Washington's most-loved and well-traveled forest roads--the Icicle Creek Road out of Leavenworth.

Oh no, I recommend WTA follow the Dosewallips Road model and protest the road re-build. Geologic processes will wipe our all roads ultimately. That means close the road forever. That is the precident set on the Dose. Or maybe WTA ought to revisit the facts on the Dosewallips Road rather than hang its stance on an unsupported and substantively ... Read Moreirrelevant NMFS letter. Its only a matter of time before the Fed fish folks make some unsubstantiated blaknet statement like "road never should have been built" that WTA falls for hook, line and sinker. As far as road access is concerned, WTA is an inconsistent advocate.

Bill, if what you are saying is true, then with a broken heart I would support the closure. Of course, I would selfishly prefer to have Icicle Creek open for all my enjoyment but there is a bigger picture. We should take into consideration what is best for the land. Maybe we could find a happy medium?
