Water 1st Happy 7th Birthday to Zoey from Portland, OR who, instead of receiving presents for herself, asked friends to donate to Water 1st, raising $158.10. Zoey's generosity means that 2+ people will have a permanent solution to their water and sanitation problems! Zoey's mom told us, "She said that she didn't need more toys or games and would rather help poor people get water."

Mitzi - your note was so inspirational we couldn't keep it to ourselves. Thanks you. If everyone did what Zoey did, our work would be done. We're glad that people like you and Zoey see that even though this is a huge problem, we can each make a difference.

Thanks, Laura. Samsunahr's story and poise talking on film to a foreigner with a camera were inspiring for us too. We can stand up and talk about our work, but we need you to make our work possible. The funds raised by Team Mighty at CARRY 5 were enough to bring water and a toilet to a Bangladeshi slum community like Samsunahr's.

Yesterday, I decided to look up the translator/editor of the book (Medea Benjamin) to thank her for her writing and see where Elvia is now. Elvia is still living in Honduras and fighting for land recovery for poor campesinos. She must be close to 70 years old!

The Valle de la Cruz project has begun! After several months of proposal review and revision, we just send our first quarterly payment for our newest project in Honduras that will benefit over 850 people in four communities. When it is completed in the summer of 2010, the project will bring safe water to convenient h...ousehold taps, eliminating the daily walk for water made by women and girls. Every household will build a toilet and every person will participate in training sessions covering hygiene education, leadership, and project administration, operation and maintenance.Read More

Patti - agreed, we are not perfect in this country. Did you happen to see this article in the NYTimes a few weeks ago about water in West Virginia? Your comment reminded me of it. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/13/us/13water.html?_r=1&scp=6&sq=west%20virginia&st=cse

In the countries where we work, water quality laws are on the books but not ... Read Moreenforced. The water ways in the capital city of Dhaka, Bangladesh are among the worst I've (Marla is writing this) seen, polluted with both industrial and human waste. There is a wastewater treatment plant for the domestic sewer system, but it treats only 10% of the waste of a city of 12 million.

Thanks for reading and caring about this issue!
