Tulsi Bhandari, a GVSU graduate and native Nepali, created this harrowing documentary about the deeply complicated Maoist insurrection and the violence that remains in the countryside to this day. Join the filmmaker for a special presentation of Beneath Everest.
Beneath Everest - Nepal Reborn
Tulsi Bhandari. Nepal. 200...9. 93 min. In Nepali with English subtitles
Doors open at 7:00pm, $5.00
Movie begins at 7:30 pm
From deep in the Himalaya Mountains where Maoist soldiers greet the morning sun as they warm up, to the cities where a powerful movement for change explodes on the streets, the people of Nepal have experienced moments they never thought possible.
Filmed over four years during the height of the insurgency and the historic transition of Nepal from a 240-year old monarchy to a Republic nation, ‘Beneath Everest’ is a journey that exposes the grass root realities of Nepal’s ten-year war.
The film critically questions the use and continuation of ‘violence’ and challenges its justifications.
Bhandari's film encourages Nepalis silenced by the fear to tell their stories, and challenges them to reflect on their fears, triumphs and hopes as Nepal begins the long journey towards peace.

thrilled at the opportunity to create an ongoing partnership with our
friend and neighbor, Circle Theatre,” says Erin Wilson, Theatre
Director for Wealthy Theatre. “The ‘One-Night Stand’ series is the best
of both worlds, with the high standards of a Circle Theatre production,
hosted at Community Media Center's multimedia-infused venue, Wealthy
Theatre.”This ‘evening of one-night stands’ will include a
production of the David Sedaris holiday favorite, Santaland Diaries,
performed by Grand Rapids and Chicago actor, Ryan Jarosch as well as
Christmas cabaret titled A Mirror Ball Christmas, performed by
award-winning cabaret performer, Brian Damson, accompanied by Michael
Sobie.Ryan Jarosch is returning to Grand Rapids having last
been seen performing as Dickie Harrington in Awesome 80's Prom with the
theatre project at the BOB; a role he played for 16 months with the
Chicago production. He has worked with Circle Theatre, Actors Theatre,
Civic Theatre, GRCC Players, and Heritage Theatre Group. Ryan was
awarded a Grand Award in 2003 for his work in The Food Chain with GRCC.
Recent Chicago credits include The Taming of the Shrew with Theo Ubique
Cabaret Theatre, and Torch Song Trilogy at the Victory Gardens
Greenhouse Theatre; a role for which he was nominated for a Joseph
Jefferson award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play. A Mirror
Ball Christmas is being performed by long-time theatre performed Brian
Damson. Brian has toured the world with his award-winning cabaret shows
and was voted Best New Performer of the Year by the L.A. Theatre
Critics. He has opened for Joan Rivers an Alan King and has been
featured vocalist with the Kalamazoo and Elgin Symphonies. In Chicago
he originated the role of Swami in Kama Sutra the Musical in Chicago as
well as Man/Tree/Grandma in Joe! the musical at Equity Library Theatre.
He directed and conceived Back to Bacharach and co-directed Beauty and
the Beast and Beehive at Circle Theatre. Brian, often been compared to
a male Bette Midler, combines "real life" stories and songs for an
evening that critics have called: "amazing" (Windy City Times), "a
standout!" (L.A. Times), "way sexier than Joe Millionaire!" (Grand
Rapids Press).
