NEW CHIEF CONSTABLE PLEDGES PUT YOUR NEEDS AT TOP OF POLICING AGENDA

Meeting the public’s needs and expectations will at the very top of the force’s agenda over the coming few years to ensure West Midlands Police becomes a first class police service, says the force’s new Chief Constable Chris Sims.

The force will move away from the traditional culture of achieving performance targets and instead concentrate its efforts on improving public confidence.

At the same time, it will continue to focus its efforts on the protection of the public against serious threats posed by issues such as terrorism, guns and gangs and serious organised crime.

"As far as the police service is concerned, pursuing performance has become our main focus, rather than pursuing victim satisfaction.

“We need to judge ourselves on victim satisfaction - or customer service - rather than by the number of detections we tick in a box.

“This is a huge cultural change but I’m absolutely convinced we’re all ready to embrace this new way of working.”

He said he had inherited a high performing, confident and hugely respected force, which had had considerable success in terms of reducing crime.

“It might be tempting to simply apply a few touches to the tiller and carry on delivering in the same way but that is not what I plan to do,” he said. “The changes I am talking about are setting us on course for the future.”

For further information about Mr Sims’ plans, see him on our PCTV website., or in our YouTube Box.

OPINIONS MATTER - POLICE LAUNCH GAY SECTION TO CRIME SURVEY

GAY, lesbian, bi-sexual and trans people are being asked how safe they feel in the West Midlands and whether they have confidence in their local police force.

The anonymous web-based survey is a branch of the force’s Feeling The Difference poll and asks about social issues including hate crime, drug misuse and any problems with housing and local amenities. There are also questions on how harmonious your neighbourhood is and whether people feel safe in the streets and public places during the day and at night.

And as well as answering questions, people can give an opinion on how good a job they feel the police are doing and whether they have confidence in the police.

To take part in the survey follow the links from the West Midlands Police website or go directly to the survey.

POLICE ASK PUBLIC TO REGISTERMYTHINGS.CO.UK

WEST Midlands Police has launched a new webpage, www.registermythings.co.uk, to encourage members of the public to register their property, so that if it is ever lost or stolen and retrieved by police, it can be returned.

The easy to remember www.registermythings.co.uk webpage links to free national property database, www.immobilise.com.

Registering your property can mean the difference between losing property forever and the possibility of having lost or stolen property retrieved.

Property registration is very simple- visit www.registermythings.co.uk and click through to immobilise. Immobilise will allow you to enter your address details and log the items you would like to register.

Immobilise is not just for registering electrical items; you can register anything such as bikes, art and furniture, which can be marked and identified using an ultra violet property marking pen.

For further information on property registration please visit www.registermythings.co.uk and click on 'Immobilise'.

THE POLICING PLEDGE

There is now a Policing Pledge. It's a new set of promises from the police on the service they should provide and every force has committed to keeping those promises.

The police promise to listen to your concerns, act on these concerns, and then keep you informed of the progress they've made. Each neighbourhood will have locally agreed priorities, as agreed by the community.

You can see the full Policing Pledge on the West Midlands Police website
