The Whole Dog Journal Great article in the November Issue of Whole Dog Journal from Pat Miller! Be sure to check it out!

www.whole-dog-journal.com
Whole Dog Journal contributor Pat Miller reports on treat reward-based training based on positive reinforcement; but what do you do when your dog can t or won t take treats?
Dave Hala Jr.
Dave Hala Jr.
I've had tremendous success hand feeding dogs that will not take treats. This also has a lot of other good side effects, such as being an effective counter conditioning method for hand shy dogs and dogs that are uncomfortable with people approaching. I require it for all dogs and puppies that attend my classes. You can modify this method to change a number of unwanted behaviors.

Pat - you just made my day! The stop/ go technique when the dog pulls on a leash worked so well with my dog that I now tell others about it, including dog walkers who have trouble with larger dogs.

The only concern I have with "better adopted by an unprepared family then euthed" is that if that one family gets the problem dog- has a terrible experience- never adopts again- tells family and friends not to adopt due to the risk- reduces the amount of adopters- dog gets returned and euthanized anyways.. we want to increase the amount of happy adoptions... not postpone deaths... and create bad experiences... (worked at shelter 4yrs and saw this)

Yes, AC is ANIMAL CONTROL ... I've been involved with animal rescue groups etc for 17 years....some AC's try very hard but are "open door" and have to take everything in....therefore very limited space....and we all know what that means

I hate to say this but after working rescue for several years I have found that all too often taking an older dog to a shelter is a death sentence. Too many of them consider older dogs unadoptable and don't even try to adopt out. Try to find someone to take him if you can and please don't put him on craig's list free to a good home, that's just as bad. Check with local dog rescue groups, especially those that take mixes. Someone or some group will take him.

The Whole Dog Approach Flea problems do not actually stem from the mere presence of fleas, but from health-related and environmental circumstances that allow parasites to wreak havoc upon a weakened dog...

My dog has fleas- and I want to get rid of them naturally, not with chemicals. I bathed him yesterday, but evidently not long enough- fewer fleas, but they're still there and he's scooting. I'll try adding the acv to his water and comb comb comb.

All of my neighbors have dogs and it's difficult if not impossible to keep fleas at bay. With five dogs it gets very expensive buying flea control at the vet's. I spray my dogs lightly with a flea control spray and rub it in pretty well. I don't saturate them but do wet down the neck area and tail area. This helps a lot.
