Pay half your taxes, half for the roads, infrastructure schools etc, the half you don't pay is the half that goes into weapons, corporate bail outs and new mercedes' for politicians. I hate it how our mere participation in society adds to the destruction of our planet

Let's keep up the great efforts to frustrate the enviromentally destructive plans of Gunns Ltd, including by writing to or calling polticians, editors and reporters. Voice your strong opposition to any public funding to Gunns which may support industrial-scale logging of Tasmania's magnificent and important forest ecosystems. The Wilderness Society urges you to sign our online petition. Gunns has taken its search for a joint partner for the native forest-destroying pulp mill international. Together we helped ensure Gunns' own banker, ANZ, wouldn't fund the pulp mill. Send a message now to (Swedish company) Sodra's CEO calling on him not to support this controversial and high risk project. http://is.gd/Ypfp

UPDATE: Sodra has issued a public statement on Friday (12/06/09) stating any involvement it has with the pulp mill would only occur if 100% Forest Stewardship Council certified, plantation timber is used and if the mill uses totally chlorine free technology. Read the full Sodra statement here >> http://www.sodra.com/en/Media--news/News/News-about-... Read Morehttp://www.sodra.com/en/Media--news/News/News-about-Sodra/Regarding-pulp-mill-rumours/

The Wilderness Society welcomes this statement from Sodra. This is a clear improvement on Gunns’ environmentally destructive proposal but we still need to ensure Tasmania's native forests are protected - that is the only way we can have any confidence any project will be plantation based. The Tamar Valley is also totally unacceptable as a location for a pulp mill or wood fired power station, we need to make sure the health and livelihoods of families there are protected.

I agree Paul - its about spatial management and not using good farming land or native forests for plantations. Intact native tropical forests are an asset that developing countries should be paid for to conserve the climate system. Does the WS distinguish between temperate and tropical systems? What's the science?

That's ok. I thought management was enforced through obligations under the World Heritage Convention. Plus global recognition and the threat of it being removed from the WH list would surely serve as an incentive to manage it correctly. It did wonders for the Wet Tropics WHA in north Queensland. And in defence of the Great Barrier Reef, GBRMPA ... Read Morehave developed a response plan which incorporates monitoring and surveys of affected areas. In north Queensland (where I'm from) they also work with tourism operators, QPWS and schools to educate locals and tourists of the impact ‘climate change’ is having on the reef. Their management isn’t perfect, but I wouldn’t say that they’re prolonging their commitment – GBRMPA is regarded as being among the world’s best costal management authorities.

The Wilderness Society in response to Simon – the whole point is we need to open up the barrages and allow fresh water to flush through (as would naturally happen if the barrages weren't there) so the Coorong and lower lakes can have a much-needed drink.
