For close to a year now, the Obama administration has been playing judicial Whac-a-Mole over accountability for Bush administration torture policies. Each time an opportunity arises to assess the legality of Bush-era torture, the Obama administration shuts

Out of work and willing to relocate? McDonald's is advertising for an assistant manager for its sole franchise in Cuba -- serving up burgers and fries that sometimes feed detainees at the prison camps at Guantánamo Bay.

Amnesty International USA's Counter Terror With Justice Campaign Congrats! You beat the Graham amendment! Amnesty's opposition was mentioned by Senator Leahy in his rebuttal to Graham. Thank you for calling your Senators!

Amendment could have barred any Guantanamo detainee from receiving a trial in U.S. federal courts.

About half an hour ago, Lindsey Graham defended his amendement to the Senate. At the end, he mind-bogglingly said that trying accused terrorists in federal courts would create a legal hodge-podge--how could using an established court system be a legal hodge-podge compared to a legal system cooked up by politicians to ensure prosecutions and hide ... After Graham, Senator Leahy (D-VT) offered a powerful rebutal, and mentioned Amnesty International, the National Institute of Military Justice, Human Rights First and other groups opposing Graham's amendement. We'll keep you updated on the vote. Thank you for taking action!

Amnesty International USA's Counter Terror With Justice Campaign URGENT! We need you to call your Senators right now, before mid-morning tomorrow -- the Senate is about to vote on an amendment introduced by Senator Graham (R-SC) that would keep Guantanamo detainees from being tried in US federal courts. See below for more background.

Here's our script. Use the link to look up the na...mes and Washington DC phone numbers of your two Senators.

"Dear Senator ___________, My name is _________ and I live in _______________ (City/State).

I am calling to strongly urge you to oppose Senate Amendment 2669 (known as the Graham amendment) to the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010 .

I believe that each Guantanamo detainee should either be charged and fairly tried in US federal court, or be released.

Thank you, _____________. "

BACKGOUND
Essentially, Senator Graham's amendment would tie President Obama's hands in closing Guantanamo. We need real justice for acts of terrorism. And real justice requires a real court--a US federal court.

Don't let Senator Graham's amendment block fair trials and keep Guantanamo open. We can win this fight--but we need you.

Please call right away. Some Senators will have a comment line to leave your message--others won't and you'll need to call back in the morning when they're open. Please be persistent.

Thank you!
Njambi, Tom, Geneve and Zeke

MILAN -- An Italian court on Wednesday convicted 22 CIA operatives and a U.S. Air Force colonel of orchestrating the kidnapping of a Muslim cleric in Milan in 2003 and flying him to Egypt, where he said he was later tortured.

fuck the CIA. It exists to torture and hold prisoners in secret and orchestrate coups and assorted shenanigans. this is a sign of the crazy mentality some of our leaders have had since 9/11: that anything, no matter how patently illegal and wrong can be justified in the name of national security

and obviously torture was intended. what possible intention could be behind sending a suspect to Egypt? It is run by a semi-military dictatorship and is known to use torture against dissidents (though i think we still give the government military funding, wtf). If the intent was EVER to have any semblance of a trial (which there obviously was not... See More), or if the intent was to interrogate him without torture, why would the CIA not keep him or turn him over to US courts, FBI, etc. Of course, admitted that they had him would've proved they'd totally broken the law and committed kidnapping by grabbing him in a foreign country without a warrant. But...they got caught anyway b/c they were totally incompetent

Congressional In-District Lobby Week, November 11

We need your help. The U.S. Congress is making decisions now that will determine whether the Guantanamo detention center is closed on schedule by January 2010, whether the U.S. will reform a U.S. immigration detention that costs millions... of dollars, is ineffective, and denies human rights, and whether the U.S. will join the international community in protecting the dignity and fundamental human rights of women.

Now is a critical time to ensure that your elected officials are hearing your voice. Your Representative and your Senators are likely to be in your district office this November 11. Apply to lead a delegation to your elected officials. Or, join a delegation near you.

Leading a delegation is easy, it will take about 15 hours of time, and Amnesty International will give you ideas, training and tips to be most effective.
