I was in the third grade when Sesame Street debuted (can it really be 40 years!) and I just remember appreciating the sense of community and family it conveyed throughout all of the learning. It was multi-ethnic, multi-generational, co-ed, humans and puppets, just this wonderful mix that looked a lot like where I lived, which at the time was very unlike the rest of children's television.
