Durham, NC -- During her workdays at Duke, Carol Rush said she typically feels like she’s burning up in the winter and freezing in the summer because of temperature settings in the Thomas A. Langford Building.

John Fay Wanted to remind Dukies about h1n1 vaccine info at this web site: http://www.dukehealth.org/locations/h1n1_vaccine_availability.

However, be prepared to wait a long time (I waited 3 hours for my daughter) in the urgent care waiting area (along side the sick folks). I finally got my little girl vaccinated, but I spent the weekend with a cold, and my daughter now has a fever. :-(

See availability of the H1N1 vaccine at Duke Medicine locations. Availability of vaccines vary, so please check back for updates.

Working@Duke This just in: In recognition of staff efforts this year, Duke will provide university staff, including the School of Medicine and School of Nursing, an additional day off with pay on Dec. 28, 2009. How will you use your extra day off?

I like this idea, but I'm afraid I won't get it because surgeries don't stop, so neither will the bank. What happens if you work on a paid holiday?

Working@Duke
@Lisa: we confirmed with Payroll that if you are required to work that day, you can either take the extra premium pay or choose to take day off within 60 calendar days. You may want to check with your payroll representative for details.

I agree with another comment that the sirens should be meant for outside and not to be heard so loudly inside...does anyone know how many decibels the sirens are?

Working@Duke Good to see so many fans using a healthcare reimbursement account! If you're still on the fence, let us help explain it for you!

P.S. It's easier to understand than you think and can save you lots of money. Happy open enrollment!

By setting aside pre-tax money from your pay into the healthcare reimbursement account, you may later repay yourself for eligible expenses incurred in calendar year that are not covered by insurance. Because ...

Working@Duke
Thanks for posing your question! You're right, there is a 15 percent tax, but with the case of Blue Devil, his taxes also include a 7.56 percent FICA tax and about 8 percent for North Carolina state tax. All those taxes are common among Duke employees. After all the math is done, Blue Devil is left with about $300 in savings.

Another important part of the reimbursement account is to budget your money properly. If you set $700 aside but don't use it all, you can't get it back. But, there are lots of different products and services you can use your account for. You can find them here: http://hr.duke.edu/benefits/reimbursement/health_expenses.html.

Also keep in mind if you sign up for the Duke Basic health plan, Duke adds money to your account for free based on the level of coverage you picked.... Read More
