Workosaur.com Can social networking be productive?

www.stevepavlina.com
Is online social networking largely a waste of time? Is it a form of idle entertainment that distracts you from more important things in life? Does it make any sense from a productivity standpoint to spend time on social networking sites, or is this just another form of online addiction?

I believe it rather can be productive sometimes but looking at what I n others (people whom I know..) uses this provision just for Fun. I feel LinkedIn scores the most when it comes to productiveness (Again according to me..); facebook, Orkut are taken as a medium of time pass..

How we wish more managers and executives would take note of the points made by Ekta, Fincy & Shruti. Some simple measures can prevent things from turning ugly but most of the stories we hear are unpleasant.

Yeah.. The better way as a manager is to call up the HR heads of Competitors and offering them a bulk deal of "you get a team in a day" , if there is demand for such category of professionals. Otherwise , it makes a lot of business sense to give them enough time to look for a job and move on.
Sacking people with less than a month's notice is a blunder. Nothing can be as bad a PR than a frustrated ex-employee :D

Workosaur.com Do ESOPs make working in a start-up attractive? Are there alternate incentive mechanisms?

Stock options promote executive risk taking, which can tone down the issues related to executive risk aversion. If properly implemented, they work as a good device to counter attrition. Also, non-qualified option grants are attractive to the organization as they fall under the compensation-expense deduction available under the law. They also resolve the agency problem to some extent by reducing the misalignment between the owner’s and the manager’s interests.

But people value more of a cash component than an option grant. Research has been very indicative in this direction. One such research found that employees value options that have just been granted with an exercise price equal to the mkt price at only about half of their cost to the firm. Secondly, employees value a diversified portfolio rather than directed only towards one share.

Finally, there are different types of stock option plans that are available and they are successful only when care is taken such that the plan is in accordance with the overall strategy of the company. So no single plan can be good or bad but it all depends on the implementation.... See More

eSop is not an independent entity "a Carrot", it has to be combined with organisation's vision and conviction to acheive compiled with the org culture and commitment from the management. Then yes, it would be attractive for a "performer".

The other way is set a revenue goal, acheive and incentivise all your employees, and tell them upfront what they would get.

Workosaur.com Twitter - Marketing channel or hype? Also, can Twitter be used to market one's self to prospective employers?

Raghav Soni

Twitter is a valued marketing tool for Online portals & Blogs(like mashable) and for established offline players like dell,HP.For other startups its value is almost negligible in terms of making a unique sale, LinkedIn would do rather well.So where can Twitter help companies ?? Ans- Twitter could be used as a customer queries(before converting into... See More sales) and feedback forum which can certainly lead to increased sales. This is supported well enough by its real time nature dolling out fast responses to potential customers.

Credit-worthy information cannot be published on twitter because of its 'flaunt-your-activity-image'. It's not activity but action that matters. I doubt it's role as a marketing channel- unless you're simply & wastefully chatting up some-one.

Workosaur.com What should a company in financial crisis resort to - Job Cuts or Pay Cuts?

November 3 at 10:58pm
Prashant
Prashant
In theory I would agree with Puneet: the C level should take the hit first because a 10% cut from a C level salary/bonus would anyday be a larger saving than doing the same for a low/mid level employee. Unfortunately, in practice we don't see that often for obvious reasons: C level has an influence on and fit in with the boards/pay commissions. So ... See Morea more practical solution would be everyone taking the same % pay cut while at the same time awarding future incentives to each like more time off or more stocks etc. One company I know also offer employees to take a voluntary week off per month, but at the same time they encourage you to stay and innovate while some others are gone. And if you work you get paid regular wages.
