Writer's Relief ”It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom…" If you recognize this famous opening line from Charles Dickens' A TALE OF TWO CITIES, then you know just how important the very first words of a book are. Here are some tips for hooking the reader right from the start!

Writer's Relief We’re continuing our coffee celebration with another interesting fact. Ever wonder where the term "cup of joe" came from? Coffee has long been a favorite of American soldiers, dating back to the Civil War. Some etymologists say that "cup of joe" derived from "G.I. Joes," since American soldiers were especially fond of coffee.

Writer's Relief We’re celebrating Thanksgiving a little early with a Coffee and Cake Soiree today. Did you know in different parts of the world coffee has its own holiday? In Costa Rica, it’s September 12th; in Ireland, September 19th; and in Japan, October 1st is dedicated “Coffee Day!” Tell us your favorite coffee flavors or brands. Does drinking coffee help keep you motivated?

IN THE SEASON OF FA-LA-LA : discussion between The Cynic & The Optimist (character monologue)

The Cynic: Ho-Ho-Ho it's time to go shopping
time for GIFTS! GIFTS! GIFTS!
Let's all congregate and fill the parking spaces... See More
in the mall and shopping places and the mad chases!
for it's SALE! SALE! SALE!
nothing but SALE!
All day, 75% off Life.
We are all just eggnog doused souls devouring
apple pie, custard pie, pumpkin pie - Rhubarb?
Say hello to our dinner guests, Mr. & Mrs. Excess and Gorge!
And YOU dare to tell ME?!
"there is some salvation, my dear" for those who seek it?!
beyond the madness?
behind the frenzy of the SALE SALE SALE?
behind the slish slush of the ugly muddy snow and traffic?
Trees slay & sacrificed so they can be lit up like Vegas
making their debut across the lands and in the neighborhoods and living rooms!?

The Optimist: Quit your bewailing!
Every year you complain and you grovel and you whine
Why? When we can give and receive and eat

The Cynic: potatoes, dead animals and tarts?

The Optimist: Oh it's the holidays , mon petite,
let not the brandy numb your heart.

Writer's Relief We have discovered this great website for writers: www.languageisavirus.com. If you ever suffer from writer’s block, they have many writing prompts and exercises to help you get those creative juices flowing! For example, the website taught us about William S. Burrough’s technique known as the “Cut-up.” Basically, Burr...oughs literally cuts up passages of prose and then pastes them together at random. Although the artistic value of this technique is arguable, it does sound like an intriguing way to pass the time.

You know Monty Python did a brilliant skit just like this, don't you? They had a character who said Bs instead of Cs, and said of himself, "What a silly bunt I am."

Writer's Relief "Rather rainy” weather on November 18, 1939 did not keep George Orwell from going into town to buy a peony root, nor did it keep him from blogging about it today. The late author's original diary entries are uploaded 70 years to the day since they were written. Take a look and enjoy!

Rather rainy. Went into Baldock but failed to get any rose bushes. Bought a peony root which perhaps I can plant at the corner instead of a rose. Clarke’s[1] say the shortage of grains, or the difficulty of sending them to & fro, is actually much greater than the papers make out. ...

Not a lot of luck writing at home, and I live an hour from the nearest Barnes & Noble. Instead, I'm taking a scenic tour of the various fast food joints that let people stay at a table for hours. Yes, I'm getting the writing done, but I've put on 5 pounds!

Writer's Relief New Oxford American Dictionary has announced the “Word of the Year” for 2009. Here’s a hint: if you’re on Facebook, you’ve probably done it. Unfriend: To remove someone as a “friend” on a social-networking site such as Facebook. Unfriend is the first Internet-inspired word to receive the WOTY title and will appear in the 2010 edition.

www.msnbc.msn.com
There are 300 million plus users on Facebook in the United States alone. Even if you and your spell check don’t approve of the New Oxford American Dictionary's newest verb “unfriend,” odds are, you’ve done it.
