YMAA Boston

YMAA Boston
This seminar will be taught by YMAA Instructors Nicholas Yang and Ben Warner.

The saber is a broadsword and is considered the root and foundation of all short weapons. About 60-70% of saber techniques are shared with any other short weapon. This seminar will cover basic saber strategies, techniques, handling, and footwo...rk. The traditional Long Fist sequence Qi Xing Dao (Seven Star Saber) will also be taught.

Saber should be one of the first weapons learned for anybody who is interested in learning a short weapon. From the techniques taught in this seminar, students will establish a proper weapons training foundation. Topics covered will include understanding the saber, selected techniques and exercises, solo practice, 2-person practice, stances, and correct body structure. This seminar will include the first YMAA Long Fist saber sequence, Qi Xing Dao (Seven Star Saber).

The focus of this seminar will be on developing strong and proper control, familiarity, and command of the saber. As with any martial art, a proper training foundation will help you succeed in the rest of your practice. It is important to build good habits early on in the training process instead of trying to break bad ones later. Be sure to practice regularly.

Baguazhang means "Eight Trigrams Palm". It is widely-accepted that Baguazhang originated from the Emei Mountain in China. Like many internal styles, it is beneficial to your health in addition to being a very intricate martial art. Through circular patterns and... movements, Baguazhang emphasizes the use of freely-flowing Qi to energize your body's muscles and strengthen your internal body, improving health and vitality. It is a style that incorporates short, middle, and long range fighting through offensive and defensive techniques. Whether you practice for health, for martial arts, or for both, Baguazhang is sure to be a valuable skillset to add to your knowledge and training.

This seminar will cover Baguazhang basic training, conditioning, and Qigong as well as a complete Baguazhang sequence. It assumes no prior knowledge of martial arts, internal or external, and will cater to all levels.

A Fluid Internal Style Based on the Eight Trigrams

YMAA Boston
This seminar will be taught by YMAA Instructor Walter Wong.

Praying Mantis is amongst the most popular external styles of Northern Chinese Kung Fu. Its techniques and motions mimic the agile and effective movements of the praying mantis. In this seminar, YMAA Instructor Walter Wong will teach the White Ape Steals the Pe...ach sequence. This sequence originates from Yu Hai, a prominent martial artist and actor in such movies as The Shaolin Temple and Kids from Shaolin. Created by Yu Hai, the sequence was made the China standard for Northern Mantis back in the mid-1900s.

The focus of this seminar will be learning the Praying Mantis "White Ape Steals the Peach" sequence. Through this sequence, students will gain a better understanding, foundation, and feeling for this traditional Northern Shaolin style.

The featured sequence in this seminar originates from Yu Hai, who was a traditional Praying Mantis Kung Fu specialist, specifically in Seven Star Praying Mantis, in addition to some other forms of traditional mantis. By the order of the Chinese government, Yu Hai was ordered to create a mantis form that would become the standard Praying Mantis form for Modern Wushu. The result was the White Ape Steals the Peach sequence, which still maintains many traditional roots, qualities, and techniques, due to Yu Hai's long traditional background.

At YMAA, we emphasize always training traditionally with root, stability, power, and sense of enemy, and that is how this sequence will be taught.

This seminar will be held by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming.

Taijiquan (or Tai Chi Chuan) has martial origins but is highly promoted for its health benefits. Every movement of the sequence has a meaning, a proper alignment of the body, a pattern of breathing and an intention of the mind. That is why learning and understanding the... intention of each movement is so important. Dr. Yang will teach the Yang Long Form, Taiji Chin Na, and Taiji Wrestling applications with the help of YMAA Boston Instructors.

This Taijiquan seminar is designed for those who are interested in learning Taijiquan for health, longevity, and vitality, as well as for martial artists who want to explore the martial roots of the practice.

For practitioners who are interested in just learning Tai Chi, you will learn the basic movements of Yang Style Taiji Long Form (either Part 1, 2, or 3). More importantly, you will also receive a foundation in Taiji Qigong and theory, which is essential for deeper understanding of the art and healing.

For martial arts enthusiasts, martial applications and power generation and emission (Fa Jin) in the Yang Long Form will also be covered. The Yang-style Taiji form is one of the very few traditional styles which still carries the martial essence of the art.

For in-depth explorations into martial applications, Taiji Chin Na and Taiji Wrestling will be offered. Chin Na and Wrestling are two of the four main categories of Chinese Kung Fu (kicking, punching, wrestling, and Chin Na). Kicking/punching techniques can be found in the Yang Long Form sequence. Typically speaking, Wrestling defends against kicking/punching, while Chin Na defends against Wrestling, and kicking/punching defend against Chin Na. All four categories of fighting form a complete cycle.

Chin Na means to "seize and control", meaning Chin Na allows a martial artist to control opponent's joints, tendons, and cavities. Chin Na was specially designed to defend against anyone who grabs or touches you. Since Taijiquan is a short range fighting style, Chin Na naturally has a close relation to Taijiquan combat, where a lot of contact can be expected from Pushing Hands situations. Many Chin Na techniques will be taught in this seminars and these techniques can be applied to any other martial arts style or system.

Wrestling was designed to defend against punching and kicking. Since Taijiquan is a short range fighting style, there are many common, known, and/or derived wrestling techniques that exist today. In this seminar, many of these techniques will be revealed, discussed, and practiced. These skills can be used for any other Chinese or non-Chinese martial arts style or system.

This seminar will be held by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming.

Qigong is the ancient art of using the mind to naturally develop the body's Qi (energy) for improved health and longevity. How does practicing Qigong help maintain health and increase longevity? How does Qigong relate to the "cultivation of internal energy" in your body...? These and many other questions will be discussed comprehensively in this seminar. Although designed to help a beginner understand the basic concepts of Qigong from scratch, this seminar can also be beneficial to experienced Qigong practitioners because they can draw on and learn from Dr. Yang's personal experiences and practice. The concepts learned from this seminar can be used as a strong foundation for a deeper understanding of the training. Also, exercises for feeling Qi, and "softening and relaxing" the chest and spine will be practiced.

This first level of Qigong is necessary for all interested in Qigong because it establishes the foundation for more advanced training. This seminar is divided into three parts. All will be covered throughout the course of the weekend.

Qigong Theory and Qigong for Spine and Chest

This seminar will be held by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming.
Prerequisite: Qigong Level 1.

Muscle/Tendon Changing and Marrow/Brain Washing Qigong was passed down to Shaolin priests by Buddi Da Mo around 530 AD. Muscle/Tendon Changing is a "Yang" type of training that helps to develop and condition the physical body's strength, enh...ancing the body's immune system. Marrow/Brain Washing Qigong targets maintaining healthy bone marrow for longevity and nourishing the brain such that the third-eye can be re-opened (spiritual enlightenment).

In this seminar, theory will be extensively discussed and the some of the exercises will be taught for practice. This seminar benefits not only martial artists, but also those who are searching for the a path to reach spiritual enlightenment.

For over one thousand years, Da Mo's legendary timeless classics have been considered the key to enlightenment and long-lasting youth. Now that many of these documents have been released into the public domain, Dr. Yang uses his extensive background in Chinese martial arts, Qigong, and science to translate, explain, and explore these texts. Using the ancient Buddhist and Taoist documents as a foundation, Dr. Yang analyzes and discusses theories and training methods in a modern, scientific manner.

Improve your health and strength through the Yi Jin Jing (Muscle/Tendon Changing Classic) and work towards longevity and enlightenment with the Xi Sui Jing (Marrow/Brain Washing Classic). These are invaluable classics for Qigong practitioners to have in exploring deeper levels of internal energy training.
